The 1949 lamb crop in principal producing states is estimated six percent below last year, with early lambing areas showing smaller crops than any since 1924. Difficult to Cultivate Rhododendrons and Azaleas
Rhododendrons and azaleas are favored by flower lovers but hard to grow. They thrive in southern climates but face challenges in northern states. Tender Asiatic species may not survive outdoors year round. Evergreen types suffer windburn in winter and drought in summer in the North.
Weather and feed conditions impact early lambing regions
The report notes variable lambing progress across regions with favorable conditions in the Pacific states and California, while Oregon and Washington faced severe winter storms delaying early lambs. Late February brought better feed, hay supplies remained ample though supplemental feeding rose, Texas showed good moisture and strong spring range prospects, and Idaho suffered retarded early lambing with weak pasture and ewe conditions.
