Echo Park dam road pledge spurs Vernal action

Vernal officials and Uintah county commissioners pledged immediate work on the road from Vernal to within ten miles of the Echo Park dam site. Mayor Stringham led a delegation urging action to designate Vernal as the dam city and attract workers and tourists through town.

Vernal Rodeo Scheduled At Uintah County Fairgrounds

The Vernal Rodeo Association announced that the annual Vernal Rodeo will be held under lights July 14 15 and 16 at the Uintah County Fairgrounds. Secretary C R Halstead noted stock contracted from Swaney Curbey of Moab. veteran rodeo man. The week brought word of the death of Guy McNerlin a frequent Vernal performer who died in Grand Junction Colorado.

Better Breakfast Contest Revealed in Uintah County

The Uintah County Nutrition Council announced a composition contest to promote Better Breakfast Week. Open to all Uintah county schools, entries may be stories poems or essays under 500 words. Prizes range from 2 dollars per grade in lower schools to 5 dollars in high schools, with multiple second and third place awards. Contest closes Friday April 22, with prizes donated by various service clubs. Harold M Lundell, superintendent, sent notices to principals urging full cooperation.

Stanolind Looks To Test Weber Sand Thickness In Ashley Valley

Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. field engineer Glenn Lancaster said the company may drill through the Weber sand in the Ashley valley field near Rangely. The No. 1 well stood at 4261 feet with 173 feet of Weber sand cored, and a decision on how deep to drill was not yet made. Local drilling progress and other field notes showed no unusual activity as Vernal area wells and nearby tests continued with no significant changes.

Sheep Shearing Under Way in Uintah County

Uintah county sheep shearing is just starting with Harold E. Davis reporting that at least one crew has arrived from Texas and is ready to begin operations. Peak shearing is expected around April 15.

Rose Garden Takes Seventh in National Contest

Vernal Gardens club enters Uintah County Memorial Rose Garden on the courthouse lawn in the Better Homes and Gardens contest, placing seventh in the under 10 000 population division. Mrs Donald Barr club president notes the garden drew earlier acclaim, 600 roses bloomed, and plans for more plantings and improvements are underway.

Four University of Utah educators will visit Uintah County on Monday April 11 to meet basin residents and speak at Uintah High School at 7 45 p m. Trees Could Speak As Guardians Fall At Court House

A local notice reports that the tall guardians of the courthouse property are being cut down this week. It notes Mr and Mrs Horace Caldwell of Ashley ward returned Sunday from a six month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northern States mission. While away they worked at Peru Indiana where Mr Caldwell was branch president there.

Uintah County to Feature in Intermountain Parade of Talent

Uintah county will be spotlighted in the Intermountain Parade of Talent Easter Sunday. The Salt Lake Tribune and local sponsors announce the county display and talent show to be staged the following Tuesday at Utah Theatre. Grant Parry of KJAM leads talent selection. the event will be broadcast on the Intermountain network. The exhibit will also showcase Uintah county industries and resources in the theatre lobby with display prep by G E Untermann and Goodrich.

Memorial services honor two war dead at Maeser

Joint memorial services for Pvt. Paul Timothy Bodily and T-5 Lorenzo Edwin Bodily were held Saturday at 2 p m in Maeser ward chapel. Harvey McKee presided with homily by Chris Bodily. Music featured solos and a duet, with speakers including Ralph Ashby and Ferrin Hawking. Graves were dedicated by Bishop McKee as military honors were rendered.

Penney's Uintah Days Return With Student Managers

Second annual Uintah Days at Penney's will be Friday and Saturday with Brent Feltch as student manager. J. D. Jones, store manager, announced the event and listed Uintah high school student officials and department heads. Cash prizes will go to the top three salespersons, continuing a program begun in 1948 to aid future retail careers.

Audio-Visual Class Tours Vernal Under Utah Extension

Under Prof William McSwain from the University of Utah extension a 105 member audiovisual education class toured the Vernal area on a Saturday. The group studied radio motion pictures sound recording script writing and stills as part of a statewide program. They visited Radio Station KJAM the Utah Field House of Natural History the Uintah Refining Co refinery at Jensen and an oil field.

Vernal Workers to be Honored by Utah Power & Light

UP&L will honor 123 veteran employees at its annual veterans club party in Salt Lake City on April 11. J C Anderson of the Vernal district will receive a diamond studded pin for 25 years of service and Travis Moore, a new member and groundman at Vernal, will be awarded a pin for 20 years of employment. George M. Gadsby, company president, will present the honors.

Ballard Boy Dies of Polio

Funeral services for Glen Owen Todd 15 son of Mr and Mrs Russell Todd were held Sunday afternoon in Ballard ward church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He died March 7 at 9 am of poliomyelitis in a Salt Lake hospital after being taken to Lake City by ambulance. His entire life was spent in Ballard ward. He attended Ballard High School.
