Unused Land Converted to Sheep Pasture in Uintah County
Uintah County farmers with idle pasture may add sheep to their operations. County Agent Clair Ricard and Extension Sheep and Wool Specialist Russell Keetch say sheep offer reliable income with lower initial costs and minimal housing and machinery. Low labor and feed costs, plus ability to use weeds and farm waste, make sheep suitable. Winter feeding requires about three pounds of alfalfa per head daily plus a small grain ration before lambing. creep feeding needs little grain. For summer green feed, sheep provide supplementary income. help available at the county Extension office.
