House Committee Votes on Upper Colorado Storage Plan on March 22

House Irrigation Subcommittee members will vote on authorization of the Upper Colorado River storage project on March 22. Rep William A. Dawson praised the hearing presentations by E O Larson and C B Jacobson while noting continued opposition from Rep John A Sayler and others as Senate hearings loom. The meeting discussed Utah Emery County dam plans, central Utah irrigation, and the Vernal Chamber of Commerce letter campaign to influence Eastern lawmakers.

Elva C Moon Honored by Uintah School District

Uintah School District lauds Elva C Moon for years of teaching service and aid during shortages. Moon died at her Bonanza home on Monday February 22. Her career began in 1924 at Ft Duchesne and included stints at Lapoint Ballard and Wilson schools before lengthy periods in Vernal Central and Maeser schools.

Funeral Services Held Today For Susie Nelson

Funeral services are held today for Susie Nelson. The obituary notes she resided in Vernal for the past five years, with surviving daughters Harden and Jen and others. Burial arrangements are to be announced.

Snow storm ends summer weather spell in Vernal

Snow and sleet fell in Vernal Wednesday night ending a brief spell of warm weather. A second storm in two days brought 13 inches of snow by early Tuesday. Temperatures for the past week, courtesy of Frontier Airfield, show March readings with varying highs and lows.

Vernal Fires Race Through Rural Yards and Roadside Patches

Vernal City fire department fought three fires in the past week. A cattle feed shed at 1210 northeast of Vernal belonging to LaReil Anderson burned for an estimated $2,500, the second blaze at the yards within a month. A trash fire started on a weed patch at 5th South and 2nd West, and another fire occurred on a county road northeast of Vernal.

Final Polio Drive Funds Reported for Uintah County

The 1954 March of Dimes drive in Uintah County raised 3 085 50 with 250 for expenses, leaving a net of 3 798 15. The funds were divided into thirds for prevention, the National Fund, and the local chapter. Campaign chairman Dan Price thanks the Polio Committee for their work.

Uintah County Men Inducted Into U S Army at Fort Douglas

Two Uintah county volunteers, Ernest Alvin Buist and Lewis Fredrick Shiflett, are being inducted today at Fort Douglas. They will proceed to Fort Ord, California, for assignment, Buist as RFC No. 2 and Shiflett as the son of Mrs. Ruth C. Shiflett.

Students May Attend Provo Tournament With Parental Consent

Uinta high school students may go to the 6 State Class BD tournament in Provo next week with a signed parental permission form from their home room teacher. Those without signed statements must stay in school for regular instruction. Students attending must make up missed work, and the district disclaims responsibility while away. Glines Girl, Five Falls From Moving Car Near Vernal

A five year old Glines girl, Maureen Bilings, was injured when she fell from a moving car on US Highway 44 about 1.5 miles west of Vernal. She suffered a skull fracture, cuts and bruises, was treated at Uintah County Hospital, and released to her parents. The accident occurred as the vehicle traveled about 35 miles per hour.

Airport administration building to rise at Vernal Airport

Construction will start immediately on a 26 by 30 foot administration building at Vernal Airport to house Frontier Airlines offices. A $10 000 appropriation from the State Aeronautical Board plus $2 150 from the airplane tax fund cover most costs. the remainder is shared by Vernal City and Uintah County. The project runs on force account with county road equipment and city water sewer setup, and an auto parking area will be added at the rear. The Frontier office will relocate to alleviate crowding, and Fran Feltch Erland Preece and deck C. Turner were named to an airport committee forming the Airport Board.

Armory Ground Breaking Ceremony Planned Next Week

Ground breaking for the new armory is set for Wednesday at 2 PM in Maxwell E. Rich with adjutant general in charge. Ralph OA Springville won the contract at 960 994 and will supervise the work in Vernal with the mayor and local citizens attending the ceremony at Fifth South Second. Rich will travel to Vernal for the event.

The State Road Commission advertised a 2.0 mile Jensen Din o saur Monument road paving bid for a two inch asphalt mix and an 80 foot concrete bridge on a state secondary road near Jensen. Chair man Dave Kittenburg reported progress as federal forest road funds shift and Utah gains 22.5 million for forest roads. Construction plans include Highway 40 sections, two bridges at 500,000 cost, and an ongoing program to improve secondary roads in Uintah Basin with Lapoint Tridell and Randlett areas on schedule.
