Economic optimism and rising family incomes in postwar America
A long analysis of wage growth and living standards shows 1947 to 1950 gains in family income, with average U.S. family earnings rising from about $4,027 in 1944 to $5,330 in later years. Most families now earn between $5,000 and $10,000, while only 15 percent of city families live in poverty. The piece stresses advertising’s role in building consumer confidence and forecasts continued growth, with firms planning 5 percent higher capital outlays in 1955 and 10–12 percent capacity expansion 1956–58, framing prosperity as a societal shift driven by education, character, and advertising.
