Inaugural Banquet Sets New Chamber Leaders

Newly elected piflours will be inaugurated at the annual banquet on Wednesday June 29 at 7 30 pm in the Hotel Vernal. O Iu Johnson will be president with Whitney Mammond as vice president and Woodey B Searle as treasurer. New directors include OL Johnson Woodey Searle Charlie Johnson along with CR Henderson and Ken Sowards. George Treadwell of Fish Northwest Construction Co will speak. the project to build the Pacific Northwest pipeline near Verna could influence the regional economy.

County Commissioners Plan Road Work in Dry Fork

County road crews were scheduled to move to Dry Fork to reline and bate the road after a county commission meeting. Slough Motor Co. won the bid for two pickups. one will serve the Fire Department jointly with the City and the other for road work. The Library Board requested 25000 for a new library and the proposal was under consideration.

Chuck Wagon Breakfast Planned for Vernal Area

Uintah Stake will host a Chuck Wagon breakfast for the Vernal area on July 23 at 6 PM at the Stake Center. A program and square dancing follow, organized by Lynn Murdock Glade Sowards and Clyde Anderson. Proceeds go to the Hoy Scouts fund.

7000 Uranium Claims Recorded In Uintah County

Eight to ten thousand claims have been filed in Uintah County over the past year by uranium prospectors. Despite heavy interest from Eastern and West Coast speculators, no claim has yielded profits yet. Each claim spans 1500 by 600 feet with a required $100 annual assessment work. Prospects may patent Federal land at $250 per acre if a valuable deposit is shown.

Oaks Park Route Closed For Bridge Replacement

Oak Mark highway to Oaks Park is closed for two weeks until about July 1 while US Forest Service crews replace an old bridge over Big Frush Creek. Supervisor William J Hurst said the route normally carries 100 people on opening day and fishermen should use Taylor Mountain or Dry Fork Canyon roads to reach the park during the ten day period.

Tourist Travel Grows in Vernal After Cold Start

Despite a cold backward spring, Vernal officials report a rising flow of tourists to the Utah Fieldhouse of Natural History and nearby attractions. Traffic is about 10 percent below last year but the 7 to 10 day period shows a clear upswing as visitors arrive from states including Illinois Indiana Colorado Oregon Wyoming Oklahoma Ohio Nevada Michigan New York Washington California Wisconsin New Jersey Texas Nebraska and Hawaii.

Annual Amateur Rodeo Heads Vernal Weekend Crowd

Vernal hosts the annual Amateur Rodeo Night Show at the Fair grounds Friday and Saturday at 730 pm. Municipal Gas Service Advantages Explained by Engineer

A. H. Sorensen of Caldwell Richards and Sorensen spoke at a Hotel Vernal luncheon to city and county officials on municipal gas distribution. He argued city operation yields higher profits, funds could lower taxes or be used to sell gas, and extension beyond city limits could be feasible with sufficient demand. He noted growing city service demands since 50 years ago and cited a cleaner fuel controlled by a thermostat as a key advantage.

Vernal Road Plans Include Main Street and County Roads

At a Chamber of Commerce meeting in Hotel Vernal officials announced that Highway 40 from Jensen to Vernal will be ready for construction next spring. Main Street through Vernal and repairs from Myton to the county line were promised. Four miles of Vernal-Manila toad work had been completed toward the second switchback on the mountain. Babson’s Washington Forecast predicted the Upper Colorado Bill would pass Congress, with Geo D Clyde noting it is a long road but not hopeless.

Jensen Ward Launch Drive for Chapel and Classrooms

Jensen ward launches a fundraising drive to build a chapel and classrooms and remodel the current building into an amusement hall at a cost of 70,000 dollars. Bishop Warren L. Billings says work could begin this year, with funds raised through the ward, the ward building fund committee led by Darwin Snow, and events like the Vernal Amateur Rodeo hosted by the Vernal Roping Club. Net proceeds from the rodeo will go toward the new chapel. other efforts have raised about 11,000 dollars so far, with 24,000 still needed in cash and labor to complete the project. The ward will provide half the funds, the Church the balance, and the present chapel dates to 1903 after a previous chapel burned.

New Dinosaur Finds At Monument Quarry Veil Oddities And Hopes

New bones appear rapidly at the Dinosaur National Monument fossil quarry as three new specimens are uncovered at the west end.
