Ute Indians May Become Oil Barons
Senate bill seeks rapid settlement of Ute surface and subsurface rights in Colorado and eastern Utah. John Boyden, Salt Lake attorney for the Indians, says the bill would allow the court of claims to issue separate judgments if rights are upheld. Voluminous testimony from last summer supports the claims, with a decision expected soon and appeals likely through the circuit court and possibly the U.S. Supreme Court. The claims cover oil fields mines and forests valued in the millions.
