Sheepmen back Benson plan to fund wool sales drive
American wool growers at the National Wool Growers Association convention endorsed Secretary Ezra Benson’s plan to divert one cent per pound of the 1954 subsidy to a special fund for a national wool marketing campaign. The plan, to be approved by a nationwide referendum next spring, would finance a sales drive via a new American Sheep Producers Council. If approved, producers would receive a 1955 subsidy paid in 1956 to lift average returns to about 62 cents a pound, drawn from the Treasury and funded by a tariff set aside.
