Lawmaker Criticizes Glen Canyon Dam Debate Over Chinle Shale
House Interior reports note Chinle shale in the Glen Canyon area is not a danger and this supports continuing the dam project. Bureau geologists say they are aware of the shale and see no cause for concern. Rep. Keith Thompson critiques Southern California's stance on the dam while noting past remarks that the project had died. The agency also released a study showing irrigated lands contribute little to national crop surpluses, with harvests mainly forage crops and high value crops in the West.

If weather allows, effectiveness will be judged after snow melt, with three years of protection needed for new seedlings to establish.
