Funeral Planned for Bonanza Mine Victim

Funeral services for Billy Ray Boren, 24, Tunanza, chi, who was killed at the American Gilsonite Mine, will be held Saturday at 1 pm in the Roosevelt Stake Center. Friends may visit Verna Mortuary Friday evening and Saturday before noon. Burial is in Roosevelt City Cemetery. Paul Borden, mine superintendent, said the victim worked in the Eureka Mine shaft with Lawrence Garr and John Clark.

State Health OKs Water Supplies In Vernal Areas

Utah State Health Department rated 322 public water supplies in 1955. Of these 30 were approved including Vernal Maecser Naples and Whiterocks. 217 received provisional approval while 175 were denied. Director C N Stutz said ratings reflect contamination protection and proper usage for interstate commerce rules. Denied supplies may not be used in interstate trade.

Rangely Safety Group Earns Fifth Consecutive Award

The Trxos Company Rangely Safety group earned a fifth consecutive award dinner after logging 654 253 manhours without a lost time injury. About 90 people attended in Rangely grade school auditorium with Eastern Star ladies serving. J B Neill assistant division manager from Denver presented the award to GG Sutton chairman of the Rangely safety group.

March of Dimes Variety Show Delights Uintah Crowd

Uintah High School hosted the March of Dimes Variety Show drawing about 1,000 spectators over two nights. Nine civic groups performed with acts ranging from Current Topics club skits to a Monitor satire by the Vernal Junior Chamber. Proceeds neared $500 for the Polio fund as Lee Walker presided and Mrs. Derell King chaired.

Southern Calif Plans New Attack On River Project

Southern California plans a renewed push against the Upper Colorado River storage project while endorsement comes from an unexpected source. Rep Craig Hosmer announced a press conference and sent letters to House members prompting a Chinlee watch response. Vernal Main Street Gets Priority In Highway 40 Project

At a Salt Lake City meeting with the State Road Commission and Vernal officials it was announced that Vernal Main Street will receive priority in the Vernal to Houser Highway 44 improvement project valued at 740000. The section must be completed by August 15 to avoid penalties while the 14 and one half mile right of way is cleared and fencing installed by W W Clyde Construction Co. Preparations include new bituminous surface, drainage pipe by Arrica Co, and removal of obstructions. A major building effort is also underway as Turner Building Co advances the 400000 Alterra Elementary School with walls poured for the boiler room and ongoing foundations, aiming for completion January 1, 1957.

Health Educator Plans Unique Program for Utes

Senator Arthur WY Watkins announced the appointment of Nell McKeever to establish a health and education program among the Ute Indians. McKeever, a Public Health Service officer, will begin Feb 13 at Duchesne and will align the program with Uintah and Ouray Reservation cultural patterns in a long range cooperative effort.

At the weekly Chamber of Commerce luncheon directors heard reports from Attorney High W Colton and Royal Henderson on the Colorado River Development project. Senator Stringham in Washington said the bill would reach the House soon and current support from the White House was noted. Wendergon reported a Chicago convention with 35 000 attendees and literature distribution over 8 000 pieces. The uranium approach drew interest, a drawing gave away 1000 shares, and many commitments were obtained to urge Washington on the project. Dinosaur Hunting licenses were also mentioned.

Nine year old Geraldine Washburn of Vernal can name notes with absolute pitch a rare skill shared by only a few in the world. She plays piano violin and organ, began public performance at five, and is concertmistress for the Ulntaht High School orchestra. Her 14 year old sister Julie also excels on piano organ and violin.
