Senate finally passes omnibus budget amid fights and cuts
The Senate approves the fiscal 1951 omnibus appropriations totaling about 35.0 billion with a 10 percent cut in most funds while preserving postal military and foreign economic funds. House bill totals 28.89 billion not including foreign aid. Conference looms as President requests 10.5 billion in 1951 for military and 4.0 billion for abroad. Congressional battles center on economic controls for the Korean war and standby powers. Atomic energy advances include a hydrogen bomb plant contract for DuPont and a stated stockpile deterrence view. Agriculture chief Brannan seeks about 8.5 billion for a 30 year Missouri River valley soil program.
