Vernal merchants offer Double Dollar Days with one dollar in script given for every dollar spent. The script is used as bidding currency at a September 2 auction in downtown Vernal, with many items discounted for back to school and other savings.
Record crowd attends session as Joseph Smith of Cornell and Mark Garff of Salt Lake City address welfare program and the question of prudent use of tribal funds. Forrest F. Stone outlines plans for distributing checks Aug 20 to enrolled members at Ouray and other locations, with limited tribal influence on spending.
Uintah County 4-H fair begins August 29 at Vernal Spouthouse with displays in forestry gardening foods and clothing. Demonstrations by clubs and a Style Revue are planned drawing public interest.
Carter Oil Co and Stanolia No. 2 Ute Tribal well in Uintah County produced 1898 barrels of oil after acidizing over Aug 18 to Aug 21. Geologist Vern Farmer reports initial 24 hours yielded 227 barrels, then 638, and 532 in the final 24 hours, averaging 23.3 barrels per hour during acidization. Completion of a drill stem test suggests potential production, with rough estimates around 10 barrels per hour after stabilization.
Vernal Utah seeks Seattle firm site as local chamber of commerce votes to survey labor, housing and water needs. Mayor Henders on leads the Industrial Development Committee aided by Gov. Lee and state officials in pushing to attract high value industries beyond the Wasatch Front.
