Vernal's Bid Event Promises 150 Items at Court House Lawn

Basin residents will witness a two hour auction starting Saturday at noon on the courthouse lawn. George Davis and Woodey Searle will chant as more than 150 articles rise for bid with total retail value around 800 dollars. Since Aug. 21 the community has traded one dollar script for every one dollar purchase, now turning into a key bid currency for a variety of goods including appliances, radios, tools, clothing, and more.

Farewell planned for British envoy to depart Sunday

A farewell testimonial Sunday evening honors Glade Calder before he leaves for a British mission. Speakers include Dr. R. V. Larson, Paul Calder, and Pres. Archie Johnson. Calder sails Sept 21 on the Queen Elizabeth for mission headquarters in London.

Critical condition for accident victim in Vernal

Eldon Luck 28 Vernal remains in critical condition at the Utah Lake Veterans Hospital after a rollover on Colorado Highway 387 near Rangely. He suffered a broken back and was unconscious for 48 hours following the August 24 crash. Two other Vernal residents were treated for injuries and released.

Rites Scheduled Today For Jensen Resident

Funeral services are set for Thomas Gibson Smith, 73, who died Monday from natural causes at Charley Wise’s Jensen residence. A World War I veteran and merchant marine, Smith lived in Jensen about 30 years and leaves ten survivors in Utah. Burial will be in Jensen Cemetery with burial services led by Bishop Thaytel Cook.

Local 32 Calls 17 Men for Sept Inductions

Mrs. Evelyn Slaugh announces Local Board No. 32 will call 17 Uintah county youths for pre induction physicals on September 11. The move aims to support Utah’s draft quota for November, set at 258, bringing Uintah county’s total to 40. Prior quotas were 10 and 23, with 25 of 34 men approved for service from the second Vernal contingent. Fifteen Uintah youths and two Texans passed their physicals, while six of ten from the first contingent passed. No action notices have been issued to the second contingent thus far. The board began by inducting men 25 with no dependents and urges records be kept current, stressing no favoritism.

Richards Services Held Monday In Naples Ward

Funeral rites were held Monday in the Naples LDS ward pens chapel for Mrs. Gertrude Ackhurst Richards who died at her residence Saturday morning. Bi Ross Merrell presided and the service noted her birth on January 7, 1916 in Miami Florida, and her education in Vernal and Oakland California. Surviving with her husband are two sons and two daughters, her mother and father William and Glayds Brooks Ackhurst, one brother, and other family.

Vernal Pool Christening Draws Big Local Interest

Merchants Host 500 Local Indians in Vernal Barbecue
