Flood damage reaches $150000 in Green River area

A countywide survey following the Green River floods estimates $150000 in losses. Alfalfa hay, grain and corn suffer major damage along with pasture, buildings and fences. County officials seek state and federal aid, plus National Guard help to rebuild dikes and replant pastures for 1958, detailing acreages and monetary losses.

County Road Chief Accepts Post With State

At the county commissioners meeting Marvin Smith, county road foreman, resigned effective September 1 to take a similar role with the State Road Commission. Harold Melee, former state road foreman, will replace him. Final plans for the new county building were approved and are being developed by architect Lorenzo Young, with the contract expected to be let in December.

Animal Circus Set Aug 29 in Vernal

An early edition notes a three ring wild animal circus by Carson and Barnis will visit Vernal for a one day stand. Gates open for public viewing of the erection of the big top and at 10 am children may see many wild animals being fed and watered. The menagerie includes lions tigers bears pumas chimps monkeys kangaroos elephants camels and a zebra with wire walkers jugglers acrobats trained horses clowns and trampoline artists in the ring.

Ashley Valley Junior High Discloses Teacher Changes

Preparations are underway at Ashley Valley Junior High for the new school term. A number of teaching changes are noted since last spring with a full corps contracted to fill vacancies. Lawrence Lee of Vernal will teach geography, Charles Barrett of Mendon will handle eighth grade math, LaVar Oldroyd will teach art, David Rasmussen will teach science and mathematics, James Nielsen will direct vocal and instrumental music, Donald Vowles will teach science, Patricia Darling will teach girls physical education, and Caudatt will replace LaVar Anderson in that role.

Funeral Held Monday for River Victim Tarrell Johnson

Funeral services for Tarrell Frank Johnson 22 of Davis who drowned during a swimming party August 14 were held Monday at 11 am in the Davis ward chapel. His body was found Thursday morning in the Green River by Weldon Carroll and Charles O Norison of Vernal. He had been married six weeks. Johnson was born January 13 1935 in Vernal, son of Benjamin Franklin and Katie Merle Smith Johnson. He attended Uintah High School and married Dixie Darlene James Massey July 6 1957 in Vernal. Survivors include his widow, his parents and ten brothers and sisters. Burial was in Vernal Memorial Park.

Western League schedule wraps up this weekend with three makeup games to be played next week after the All-Star series. Thursday saw the Yanks edge the Tyers 3 2 as Tommy Murray starred on the mound. Cary Belcher pitched for the Tigers amidst a rough defensive showing by the Lions. Friday featured a festival make up game with all players participating and heavy hitting from Belcher and Pope. Utah school lunch workshop draws 355 staff at Uintah High School

The 11th annual Utah school lunch workshop held last week at Uintah High School drew 355 employees across elementary, junior high, and senior high districts with a two session format to accommodate all districts. Organizer Lola Christensen led the event under the Utah Board of Education with Nodney A. Ashby directing the lunch program. Attendance across Uintah and Duchesne districts exceeded 3,000 students in related programs as the state emphasizes testing and remedial reading, pre kindergarten readiness, and safety measures in school operations.

Atoms for Peace Display Set for Vernal Jaycees

Vernal Jaycees in cooperation with the American Museum for Atomic Energy will bring to Vernal today a mobile display titled Atoms for Peace. The exhibit, located on the fieldhouse lawn, showcases peaceful uses of atomic energy. Jaycee director Lynne King said the display publicizes benefits of atomic development and aims to spark youth interest in science.

Standards Oil and Sohio Officials Visit Asphalt Ridge

Eight officials from Stand ard Oil and Sohio Petroleum surveyed the Asphalt Ridge site with Vernal Chamber of Commerce leaders. Sohio drilled 13 holes so far but plans remain uncertain as the two year geological survey proceeds and a potential large plant is debated.
