Phone System Nears Final Phase at Vernal Rotary
Vernal tele phone exchange manager Don R Cowley told the Rotary Club last Thursday that the city will switch to a new system that promises "the best service in the world." The rollout begins with a switchover one minute after midnight August 19, with rural lines moved to private or semi private status and direct dialing to 60 million phones. The change will reduce operators from 40 to about 20, though more staff may be needed later. Dial prefixes 1 789 will be added for external numbers and mailing of directory names will begin August 15. A public open house will showcase the new facility and gear, including direct Hawaii and Canada dialing.
