Chamber Names R Henderson New President

Royal Benderson elected president of Vernal Chamber of Commerce for the year starting July 1, with Glade M Sowards as vice president and Rex Roy Lance as treasurer. Retiring officers include Paul Armstrong, Henderson, and Roland Merkley. The annual agriculture and restock tour proceeded with stops at Oura National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, Cursy pump project, Indian Subjugation farm, LDS regional farm, Great Lake Timber Co plant at Lapoint, Goran MekKee farm, and White Rocks fish hatchery. The tour was led by Roland Merkley with county agent Ben Lindsay and featured Francis Feltch of the Utah State Road Commission outlining road plans.

Basin Man’s Attacker Sentenced Five Years To Life

Elden Brady Bridgeland postmaster, 64, died in Salt Lake hospital after a February 20 robbery. Dennta Kazda, 20, of Oakdale, Utah, was sentenced by Judge R. L. Tuckett to five years to life for attempted robbery and assault with intent to murder. Brady’s death was attributed to illness, not gunshot wounds during the crime. Norma Rae Barker, 10, of Salmon, Idaho, had case continued. brother Donald Kazda, 27, detained in Utah for same charges. Dennis Kazda surrendered in Nebraska. all connected to a Kimball County robbery. Funeral services for Brady held in Bridgeland. Three Hot Springs, Ark., men were sentenced to not less than five years for a March 21 armed robbery in Roosevelt. Clinton McCoy, Elmer Vowton, and Gracey Lawson, all 18-20, were convicted. three women charged were dismissed.

K E Nelson president of American Gilsonite Company calls a New York firm's $3 million antitrust suit in U S District Court San Francisco false and unfounded. He says AGC will vigorously contest the case and that mining operations in the Amish Basin will continue normally.

Steinaker Reservoir Emerges as Top Opening fishing Spot

Utah officials forecast Steinaker Reservoir to become a premier opening season fishing site after a 25,000 fingerling plant last September produced excellent growth. A 16 rainbow trout net catch near the reservoir showedhealthy pink flesh and weights near one third of a pound on average, with larger fish reaching 12 inches. The fishery team, including Bob Jensen and Glenn Davis, noted the reservoir's depth and nutrient-rich waters boost early growth, though future stockings may shift to bass if heat limits trout.

Vernal Chamber of Commerce board approves a road committee report urging Unital County to create a permanent Ouray maintenance program with a nine man crew and mobile camp. It calls Seep Ridge Road as the main artery and the No 1 project and seeks seven miles linking Seep Ridge to Mountain Fuel Supply Bridge Road for heavy duty use.

Gas Boom Looms in Uintah Basin Drill Plan

L W Folsom of Mountain Fuel Supply outlined a plan to drill 76 to 100 wells in the Uintah Basin in 1902, predicting one of the era’s largest gas booms. He cited reserves over one trillion cubic feet, with Wasatch and Green River formations as main sources and a $10 million transmission line recently completed to transport 109 million cubic feet daily.

Man Breaks Leg In Pipe Mishap

Tames Thacker of Alytonah was hospitalized Monday after a pipe lay accident at the Valley Water Scheme project. Two pipe sections trapped his leg causing a fracture in the small bone of the right leg. He remains in hospital for swelling to subside and a cast to be applied.

Water Problem Probe Contract Set for 6500

Senator Bennett announced a $6500 contract to Nielsen and Maxwell Consulting Engineers of Bountiful for a water supply probe on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation. The study tests feasibility of underground piping from Uulah Heap Springs to serve about 175 families south of Ouray, reducing long water hauls and aiding both tribal and nontribal homes.

County Creases Two New Precincts in Vernal Area

Uintah County Commission on Monday approved creating two new voting precincts in the Vernal area along Vernal Avenue. Current precincts listed include City No. 3 Ey City No. 4 S. W. City No. 20 and N. W. City No. 21 final zoning ordinance draft approved Showalter Motor the low bidder on the new sheriff's car. County grants a conditional deed to the state for land on Mall Street to be part of the Dot Hunter Dinosaur Memorial Garden with use restricted to that purpose.
