Native Lumber Relied Upon Under War Conditions

Native lumber and other wood products from national forests in the intermountain region are being relied upon under present war conditions to meet local market needs. Output at most units has risen in the past year, but a shortage in lumber numbers for normal needs may occur as northwest output shifts to defense. Local use can partially offset the demand, according to W L Robb, assistant regional forester in charge of timber management for region four.

Local mills offer native timber as substitute for imported lumber

Foresters note that abundant small regional mills can produce solid lodgepole pine and Engelmann spruce equivalents to imported forest products. Utah aims to keep elk population near 10 000

Director Mark Anderson of Utah's fish and game outlines a five point plan to manage elk numbers. The program includes trapping, relocating, fencing, feeding in emergencies, and purchasing range lands. An aerial count suggests a population around 4000 to 10000, with emphasis on sustainable hunting and chronic marauder control.

Utah Elk Planting Proves Most Prolific in Nebo Range

Utah’s elk herds lag behind famed western basins yet Nebo’s 1914 planting proves the most thrifty of any introduced or native herd. From 48 elk, 2,000 have been legally hunted and hundreds remain on the range, as experts note widespread early abundance across the West but sharp declines by 1910 with few bands surviving in remote areas.

Transplanting Elk to Utah Ranges Aims to Build Herds

The idea to trap elk in Yellowstone region and transplant them to other ranges produced 228 elk moved to Utah. Utah has grown its elk population to over 4,000 and issued hunting permits for 4,650 during special seasons. A truck carried elk from Nebo to the Uinta ranges where native elk exist but struggle, and officials hope the introductions will expand the herds, according to Mr. Anderson.
