Funeral services for Mrs Barah Melissa Hall Davis 66 wife of Charlie Davis were held Friday at 9 00 p m in the Vernal First ward chapel with Bishop Pontha Calder presiding The chapel was filled with relatives and friends and many tales of beautiful flowers testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held The flower committee included Mrs Irvin Eaton Mr Ralph Siddoway and Mrs James Chivers The service featured several musical selections and speakers Fuller R Remington and Arnie Johnson with closing remarks by Bishop Calder Pallbearers were five brothers Henry Ward Orson Jerr and William Hall and a grandson Don Davis of Roosevelt Interment followed in the Macks View cemetery under the direction of the Swain Funeral Home with Mark Hall dedicating the grave
An elder Indian man, Dick Stbele, killed his daughter in law Marc Stbelo and then shot himself after a dispute at an Indian camp near Caray. The couple had recently mourned his son's death, and the body of his other son was found frozen last winter. Autopsy by Dr. F. O. Eskerson confirmed gunshot wounds. The investigation is ongoing led by Sheriff Hoo M. Snyder and weight of the Dinrih-Guray county. The Bear dance schedule for the week, set to start Tuesday noon, was postponed due to the tragedy and will resume next Sunday.

Funeral services for Francis Noah Nelson 42, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex J. Nelson of Jensen, will be held Friday at 2:00 p m in the Jensen ward chapel with Bishop Reyd J. Merkley presiding. He died Monday in Grand Junction, Colorado, after a long illness in Ely, Nevada. Interment will be in Jensen Cemetery under funeral direction.
The Vernal Lions Club luncheon at Grill Cafe Wednesday evening featured Father Robert J. Murphy of the Paulist Missionary as principal speaker. Milton Judd sang with Mrs. Stringham accompanying. a male quartet performed songs. An election elected officers led by President Went, with several vice presidents, a secretary, director slate, and holdovers. The club announced an Initial Clean Up and Paint Up campaign next week and a Friday half holiday to encourage business cleaning efforts.
At the Vernal Suter Chamber of Commerce meeting nominees for the coming year were announced. presidential candidates are Harold Dike Paul Lyman and Don Jensen. Vice president nominees are Don Showalter and Henry B Millecam Jr. Secretary treasurer nominees are Golden Earl and DeVere Dennis. Three directors to be elected include Robert Blaker Raymond Anderson Lyle Anderson Lon R Richardson and Jean Wardock. Laurence Aiddoway named state director and Bud Mathis will remain as holdover director. The meeting also set dates for the Jaycee Annual Clean-up campaign April 13 to 19.
Engineers from the Bureau of Reclamation are surveying 26 power and irrigation projects in the Colorado River basin and 17 in Idaho as part of a National Resources Planning Board compilation. Only one survey is complete. several are advanced, most are preliminary. Funds are in the Interior Department appropriation bill. The Utah sites include Dewey Echo Park Split Mountain Rattlesnake and Dark Canyon. A Utah power market survey accompanies field work as new plants arrive. Echo and Dewey are advancing. feasibility is established for some projects. Further field work will shape working plans.
Vernal sailor stationed in Iceland is back in the United States for a brief visit. He plans to return to San Diego by April 17 after spending eight months in Teeland. He is staying with his sister Mrs. Manford Trasmussen.
At Uintah County Democratic convention held in the courthouse at 2 p m Saturday acting county chairman Puller H Remington presiding, Henry Maugh deputy game warden was elected chairman of the Uintah County Democratic central committee. Other officers elected were Mrs LeRoy Taylor vice chairwoman, Thomas Timothy deputy sheriff secretary and Frank Noel treasurer. Delegates named for the state Democratic convention: Henry laugh Mrs LeRoy Taylor Fuller FL Remington Andrew Vernon Co B Bartlett Ray Labrum EF M Snyder George A Slaugh and Mrs Ray Hatch. Alternates Lawrence Caldwell and J Hay McKee.
Bryan Goodrich Archis Johnson and G and Carter attended the April conference in Salt Lake City. They met President Hyrum Calder at LDS hospital before sessions and joined meetings in Assembly Hall at 10 2 and 7 o'clock. They attended general Sunday morning and testimony meetings for stake presidents Monday concluding at 10. They returned home Monday evening with Mrs A Alwyn Cll visiting relatives en route.
Shuamabér and surrounding organizations join forces for a week of beautification and civic projects. Volunteers from Ladies Aid, Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Lions, and other groups plan collection of scrap metal, paper, and debris. Music by Uintah High School bands accompanies a work parade, with emphasis on shade trees, fruit trees, flower beds, and Victory Gardens. City leaders urge neighbors to help, with Fire Chief Wendell Pope organizing Sunday sweeping efforts downtown.

Alterra high school represented its school at the 18th annual three day speech and drama tournament at Brigham Young University in Provo. Forty two schools and about 700 students from four states competed. The one act play Prank and Irna shared honorable mention, taking third in comedy. Cast included Blain Caldwell Lillien Knight Ursa Allred Ora Hamaker Cleoj Campbell Wilsie H. Bolton Thora Pickup directed by Helen Demos. Ursul Allred earned an individual honor for dramatic reading. Other participants were Erold Wiscombe Lillian Knight Death Rae Lamen Danny Groft Jack Jenkins Barrett Clark of New York judged the competition.
Carl Bearle operates a 26 by 34 foot greenhouse offering tomato plants and annual flowers such as asters and dragon flowers for transplanting. The greenhouse reports a strong early vegetable yield and will include potted plants. Mr Scarlet stocks abater trees and has arranged three day frit deliver y for next week's Clean Up Campaign.
Standard twenty four hour first aid courses conducted in Naples and Davis each Wednesday and a Thursday evening under County Red Cross First Aid Chairman Tr. I W Stevens. Classes invite Naples and Davis residents, with certificates awarded to those who pass. Dr Stevens assists and notes plans.
Army Day observances were held with Uintah County Defense Council and American Legion members sponsoring a 2:00 PM event at Uintah High School followed by a city square program. The UGS band conducted by Kan Enger performed The Star Spangled Banner and The Caissons Go Rolling Along. Milton Judd and Mae Jorgensen led a steampaint, with Mayor Btringham and Ekayor J. H. irra addressing defense needs and urging purchases of defense stamps and bonds to aid soldiers and planes. Color guards and marchers included John G. J tusru Donald BL Narr and Wendell Color guards were conducted by Glenn Lambert and Mae Davis.
Large crowd fills the Vernal ward chapel for the Masonic funeral of John K Bullock 80 a civic leader and banker who died of a heart attack the previous Monday He was the oldest living member of Storey lodge A F and A M of Provo joining the order in 1885 Masonic rites were conducted by O St Vance with scripture readings Memotini Roll Lay My Head Beneath a Ross and Abide With Me sung by local choirs H W Woolley delivered the eulogy

Sears Roebuck awards defense bonds and gold medals to top county and state winners, with four state representatives advancing to sectional and national rounds for all expense trips to Chicago and additional bonds.
A Saturday evening blaze gutted the old Davis cabin near the county fairgrounds, leaving the landmark completely destroyed. Fire crews battled flames but could not save the historic structure. Damages are being assessed as authorities investigate the cause.
