Fire destroys two buildings on Cincinnati-Dayton Road

Firefighters from Liberty, Union, and Monroe townships battled an arson linked blaze on Cincinnati-Dayton Road in Bethany shortly after midnight. Two storage buildings at 6558 and 6560 were completely destroyed, with 6558 collapsing and threatening 6560 as crews fought hot embers and limited access.

Voter registration push across Union and Liberty townships

Civic groups urge registration ahead of the November election with drives at Lakota High School Union Elementary Hopewell Elementary and Citizens Bank in Pisgah. Special sessions are scheduled Sept 22 24 25 at the Pisgah firehouse and Sept 23 at Union School. Liberty Township locations include Liberty Elementary and Countryside Village Mobile Home Park with weekday and Saturday hours.

Armco Steel Opens Middletown Works for 75th Anniversary Tour

Armco Steel will open its Middletown Works to the public this weekend for the 75th anniversary. Tours run Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with plant walking tours, a 40 minute train ride, and a dome presentation about Armco’s history. Entrance is via Oxford State Road. cameras are not allowed and seedlings will be given as souvenirs.

Worthington to Build Steel Plant in Monroe

Worthington Industries plans a 113000 square foot steel pickling and processing plant on 20 acres along Lawton Road in Monroe. The $6 million facility would employ 60 to 100 workers and feature two pickling lines with 60000 pound coil processing capacity annually. The project, pending CIC approval on municipal bonds, could open in 1976 with slitting and pickling starting in 1976 and 1975 respectively.

Union GOP women host Mike Fox in Union Township meeting

Union Township Republican Women host State Representative Michael Fox along with Lakota school board President Robert Niederman and Union Township Trustee Larry Gandler for a morning issues program at Margaret Gandler’s West Chester home. The session covers constitutional amendments, county issues, and local levies with a slide presentation and luncheon to follow.

Perkins withdraws from Lakota board race

Richard Perkins of West Chester withdrew Monday as a Lakota board of education candidate citing city charter restrictions on employees involved in political affairs. The Butler County Elections Board removed his name from the November ballot leaving four candidates for two seats: Wallace Schulze, Robert Howard, Galen Shaffner and Charles Miller.

Sight and Sound Spectacular to feature 13 area bands

Monroe hosts the Sight and Sound Spectacular at Memorial Field next Saturday September 27 drawing about 1500 musicians from Lakota Talawanda Middletown Fenwick Carlisle Colerain Lebanon Edgewood Princeton Taft Franklin Madison and Monroe. Each band receives a plaque and all perform a closing Bicentennial themed number March America with a $1.50 admission.
