Monstrous hay bales signal new farming trend near Ross
Farmer Richard Brown des cribes his Vermeer round baler and five by six foot bales weighing about 1,500 pounds. He stacks less, harvesting 50 head of Red Poll cattle on 100 acres of hay and some corn while labor costs push toward field storage. The bales, a mix of alfalfa red clover and timothy, draw curious motorists along Layhigh Road. Weather and pests like the alfalfa weevil threaten alfalfa crops this year.
