Controls on irrigated land to be tightened

The Interior Department proposed new rules to restrict ownership of land irrigated with Bureau of Reclamation water. Aimed at preserving family farms, the plan targets excess lands by requiring buyers to live within 50 miles and needing Interior approval for all excess land sales. It also enforces a 160 acre cap and allows leasing up to 160 more acres. The rules apply to the arid West where water access drives productivity.
