Red Cross Canteens Demonstrate Postwar Food Conservation
Red Cross mobile canteens set up in the square to show families how to eat healthfully while conserving scarce foods. Demonstrations include checklists for home use, menu planning, and leftovers repurposing as part of the war relief effort. Homemakers already participate by designing menus and finding new ways to use scraps such as mashed potatoes and bread ends. A Peanut Butter French Toast recipe is shared, using peanut butter, butter, bread, egg, milk, salt, and pepper, fried in shortening and served with tomatoes or fruit for a simple meal.
