500 Men To Be Laid Off By D and H Saturday Night

About 400 workers at the Colonie shops of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad are to be furloughed indefinitely at midnight Saturday. A spokesman said the layoff results from a drop in business, with a skeleton force of about ninety kept on duty. No other layoffs are planned, and the Colonie shops will not shut down, just curtail operations until demand returns. The layoff compares to a two week closure last month affecting about 600 employees, after which shops reopened on schedule.
