Veto prompts anger over estate tax relief for farmers
Upstate Assemblyman L Richard Marshall blasts Gov. Hugh Carey for vetoing a bill that would exempt the first 400000 in farm value from estate taxes and ease inherited farm losses. The New York Farm Bureau and others warn fewer farms without relief, citing dairy farm counts dropping from 52944 in 1957 to 19675 in 1975. Carey says the bill would cut 3 million dollars annually in state revenue and mainly affect federal taxes.
