Lawmaker decries veto as farms fade without estate tax relief

Upstate Assemblyman L Richard Marshall and the New York Farm Bureau condemn Gov. Hugh Carey's veto of an estate tax bill aimed at helping family farms. They warn continued tax pressure will shrink farm numbers, noting dairy farms fell from 52,944 in 1957 to 19,698 in 1975. The measure would have exempted the first 400 000 dollars of farm value and taxed inherited farm land at its farm use value. Carey says the veto protects state revenue and aligns with federal tax structure.
