Police Chiefs Urge Retaining Sheriffs in New York
The New York State Association of Police Chiefs approved a resolution urging the Constitutional Convention Committee on the Executive Branch to reject plans to abolish sheriffs. They warned that replacing sheriffs with county police commissioners appointed by the State Police superintendent would concentrate power, undermine independence, and threaten law enforcement integrity. About 75 chiefs attended as urban racial tensions across the state were discussed amid disruptions limiting attendance.
