Senate defers action on Marshall nomination

Washington AP reports the Senate Judiciary Committee deferred action on Thurgood Marshall the first Negro nominated for Solicitor General and later for a Supreme Court seat as Sen Everett Dirksen and Sen Sam Ervin commented. A move to recommend postponement was discussed by Democratic and Republican members amid persistent questions about the nomination.

Peck Hose Field Days Open With Thrills and Parade

The third annual F. B. Peck Hose Co. field days begin today at 7 p.m. at Garrett Field Waterford continuing through Sunday. Five thrill rides six teen booths and refreshments are planned. Fireworks Friday record hop Saturday parade Sunday followed by firemanic contests with at least 30 companies and trophies for parade and contests. Volunteers from a wide area and auxiliary bands join the event starting from St. Anne's Church parking area at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Young Republican Club of Waterford will gather at 7 30 p m today in Republican head quarters 33 Broad St Members aged 17 and over may attend to learn how to help create a better and more progressive group.

St Marys Parish Picnic Set for August at Saratoga Spa

Lawrence Powers, temporary chairman, presides at the St Marys Parish Picnic sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and local GOP groups. A guest from Saratoga St Marys Parish Family Piety Republican Committee speaks. The event at Saratoga Spa State Park will feature a business meeting, refreshments, and prizes. Games include swimming, softball, and horseshoes. each family provides its own picnic.

Registration For Voters Scheduled In Waterford

Saratoga County Board of Elections will hold special permanent registration days in Waterford on Friday and Saturday at Waterford Town Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Town Supervisor Charles S. Taylor announced that under the new permanent personal registration law everyone must register this year to be eligible to vote in November. Any town resident may register on either day.

M16 Complaints Raise Muzzle Charge In Hearings

Washington based House subcommittee chair Rep. Ichord says soldiers may have been muzzled after visiting South Vietnam to hear complaints about the M16 rifle. Letters suggest field commanders punished servicemen for reporting issues. Pentagon says Army and Marine Corps are investigating.

Chief Fredette Convalescing at Saratoga Lake

Chief Arthur Fredette of the Waterford Police Department has been discharged from St Marys Hospital after surgery and is now convalescing at his summer home at Saratoga Lake. Deputy Chief Kenneth Chard leads in his absence. The American Legion post meets at 8 pm with a report on the recent Veterans Administration Hospital social. Refreshments will be served.

Waterbury Visitors Travel and Away Vacations

Mrs. Roberta Hurley and daughter Amy of Waterbury Conn are visiting Mr. and Mrs. James Burnes en route to Long Beach Calif where Mrs Hurley will teach in the public schools. Mr and Mrs Alvin Rosenberg return from a two week trip to Washington Bethesda Williamsburg and Virginia Beach attending the Shriner s Convention. Miss Barbara Zucker neice of Mrs Rosenberg stays with the Rosenbergs this summer.
