Revised Malpractice Compensation Urged

A state panel of experts urged a new system for malpractice compensation, stressing study of a possible reform rather than no fault. The panel, chaired by William J. McGill, proposed a task force, a $100,000 cap on pain and suffering, structured and periodic awards, and stronger peer review, while noting temporary insurance stabilization but no full solution. Senator Tarky Lombardi and Dr. Mannix led discussions with area physicians at Albany Medical College, urging self discipline, five core physician duties, and candor on errors. The report also touched hospital malpractice insurance and actuarial challenges, with a Mayo-style call for permanent fixes.
