Razing Revives Old Memories On Mechanicville Park Avenue
Four venerable three story brick blocks on Mechanicville's upper Park Avenue sit empty as Urban Renewal demolition begins. The last Christmas season sees windowless fronts and bulldozers as the Woodworth five and ten, Guild Block dry goods, and other longtime shops vanish. The wholesale era traces back to 1915 with Woolworths opening, followed by Baker brothers and Safford's hardware, and the Halfmoon radio shop. The four blocks are slated for removal by the first week of the year to clear space for Park Plaza shopping center.
