The weekly U.S. Command casualty summary shows 207 Americans killed in the Vietnam War last week, a drop from 212, with 634 wounded, 435 hospitalized. South Vietnamese totals: 286 government troops killed, 791 wounded, 49 missing. allies: 28 killed, 38 wounded. American and allied forces killed 1,554 enemy last week, down from 1,826.
The 572 foot David E Day carrying 150000 barrels of gasolene diesel and fuel oil ran aground at 1230 a.m. 1000 yards off Cape Disappointment Washington side. Coast Guard helicopters evacuated 11 crewmen from the wave swept decks as 20 foot seas broke over the vessel before it maneuvered free and entered port.
At a United Nations pledging session Munir Kreidie a special U.N. aide raised funds for Palestine Arab refugees. He joked to Irish Foreign Minister Frank Aiken about Dublin doubling support. Aiken replied he would, and Ireland’s 1968 contribution rose to $40,000 from $20,000 this year.
The Muchachos Drum and Bugle Corps sponsored by the Tibbits Cadets win an invitation to Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans on Feb 18 and 19. Director William C. Barnes notes it is the first northward invitation and outlines expenses, new uniforms, and fundraising needs at St. Joseph's rectory or through Barnes.
In Cherry Hill New Jersey Keith Bashaw and his wife Celeste agreed to donate the heart of their dying son to a 24 year old infant in Brooklyn. The heart transplant occurred after the Philadelphia birth of their son who died days later. The Bashaws described turning sorrow into hope despite the recipient's death and acknowledged mixed emotions about the outcome.
NEWBURY England AP Queen Elizabeth personal pilot Air Commodore John Blount 47 died when a royal helicopter piloted by Prince Philip plunged into a Berkshire field. Four aboard killed including Blount and crew Squadron Leader M M W Hermon Liversidge Flight Lt R Fisher navigator. Blade failure suspected witnesses say.
In Milan Mario Grugni, serving a jail sentence for forging a driver’s license, asked to work on an invention that could open any lock. Authorities refused access to the project, blocking his attempt to develop the key for access and security purposes.
Joseph R. Shaw president of the Associated Industries of New York State Albany was elected chairman of the State Association Group of the National Industrial Council at its 64th annual meeting at the Waldorf Astoria New York City for 1968. He will lead with two other chairmen as the council heads the group.
Premier Stoica proposes Nicolae Ceausescu as party secretary general and combines president and party chief roles. The move ends collective leadership norms, elevating the 49 year old to Romania’s top posts amid a party conference vote likely to formalize the nomination by the Grand National Assembly.
UPI reports race driver Bob Veith, entry in the Indianapolis 500, was scheduled to address highway safety at a Springfield high school on Wednesday. His car collided with a truck while en route.
