Area Volunteers Aid Developing Nations With Technical Help
VITA draws on RPI study to match student projects with overseas needs. Prof Lashmet heads a committee advising on how engineering colleges can use problems as homework. Ford and Sloan Foundations fund the effort. A Peru request spurred local volunteers to gather lobster trap and stocking fish data for transmission to the requester. VITA, founded 1959, now has nine chapters, 2000 volunteers, and rising workload with international support.
