Septoria Black Stem Hurts Iowa Oats Yields
The Septoria black stem oat disease has spread across Iowa, reducing yields and grain quality in 1953. Dr. H. C. Murphy of Iowa State College notes kernel discoloration, leaf spotting, and stem girdling that lowers yield and test weight and causes lodging. Early planting and using moderately resistant varieties like Branch Ajax Beaver and Shelby offer partial protection. susceptible types include Andrew Marion Benton Cole Cherokee Nemaha and Bonham. Limited feeding trials show livestock can consume affected oats without harm.

Hog outlook and feeding profits for 1953 pig crop
County Extension Director Ralph Poynter and farm economist Francis Kutish project modest gains in hog production for 1953. They warn of lower spring farrowing in the south and continued pressure from lard prices and beef supply, offset by rising beef slaughter and stable hog corn ratios. In Iowa, 1952 hog output lags 1951 by nine percent while meat demand remains strong.
