Meriwether Lewis An American Explorer and Governor

Meriwether Lewis, born near Charlottesville Virginia in 1774, joined William Clark to travel the Missouri River to its source and became one of the first to reach the Pacific north of Mexico. He served as Jefferson's private secretary, explored the Northwest, and in 1807 governed the northern Louisiana Territory. His 1809 death near Nashville remains mysterious, possibly self-inflicted or foul play.
