An old timey column surveys radical plans and tech advances, noting a Spartan eugenics code to breed "better German babies" and urging mothers to abandon education for child production. It also sketches Van Der Graff's 10,000,000 volt generator, prohibition debates, artificial eye TV, gold questions, and Detroit bank closings amid economic tension.
Readlyn won 12 to 3 over Tripoli as Gehrke drove in four runs and scored three. Homan pitched six innings with four hits and five runs allowed, Kasemeier briefly relieved, Vanderlinden finished, Readlyn erupted in three innings with most runs in the 3rd and 7th.
Waverly nosed out Plainfield 8 to 4 in a Cedar Valley league game. Waverly collected nine hits off Plainfield pitcher Shadbolt while Plainfield had seven off Rohlf. Shadbolt fanned five with no walks. Rohlf struck out four and walked one. Waverly scored two in the first and second innings, Plainfield two in the first fourth and eighth. Webster and Elwood each doubled, Carl Smith hit a triple for Plainfield. Graham caught for Plainfield and Elwood pitched for Waverly.
Nashua defeated Shell Rock Sunday afternoon 7 to 1. The teams had 10 hits to 4 and 2 errors to 5. Battery Nashua Wilson Strike Ramige P Harris Shell Rock. Bowers doubled and joined in the only double play E Chandler Spiers Bowers. Ramige struck out five, Wilson nine. Crowd of about 260 attended.
Sunday morning services at the Congregational church featured a well attended children’s program with scripture, prayers, solos and recitations. Baptism of twins Marlyn and Carlyn Anderson highlighted the event along with numerous musical numbers performed by the children and church groups.
Mary A. Cole 82, daughter of James and Hannah Jeffers, born 1851 near Lockport Illinois, lived most of life in Black Hawk and Bremer counties. She married Charles S. Cole in 1870, four children born, three surviving: John in Bremer County, Charles in Ipswich South Dakota, Nellie Wills of Waterloo. Died July 1 1933 at son John’s home. funeral July 3, 1933, the couple’s 63rd anniversary. Burial in Janesville cemetery beside her husband. Rev A W Gable officiated.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosted a picnic in Kelsey grove north of town on Wednesday afternoon June 28. About 45 attendees included four senior and eleven junior members with their families. Husbands joined for supper. event honored junior members for their help with this year’s poppy drive.
Ed S Schreiner operating superintendent for Central States Power and Light died in Oelwein after a 33 000 volt current at Sumner station last Monday shocked him, knocked him unconscious and burned his right side and feet. Schreiner was well known in Tripoli and spent time there during his duties.
The Royal Neighbor lodge will hold their regular meeting for July at the Legion hall on Thursday evening July 6 at 8 30. A good attendance is anticipated.
Miss Agnes Leo daughter of Mr and Mrs Nels Leo of Yale married Dr Frank Anderson son of Mrs Mary E Andreson Sumner in a Yale home ceremony on June 29 officiated by Rev G Hall. Attendants included Ruth Anderson Katherine Sharp and others from Iowa State College. The couple will reside in Newark New Jersey where Dr Anderson works for the Bureau of Animal Industry.
W H Luhring a Douglas township farmer suffered serious spinal neck injuries after falling from a hay load at his Bremer area farm. He was taken to Iowa City University Hospital for examination and treatment, then returned to Waverly to stay with his brother Henry. He will wear a brace and remain bedbound for a month.
The orphans home in Waverly invites public attendance for a Sunday festival on July 9 on the lawn. Rev. L Gehret and Rev. J G Oltmann will give sermons, with Prof Robt Skar and Rev C Landbeck’s band providing music. A children’s program, lunch, and open house follow, with performances by a New Hampton choir and the Grafton band.
Heavy rainstorms Friday and Saturday with gusty winds and hail aided crops that suffered in a prior drought. Some areas near Tripoli and between Tripoli and Fredericksburg saw severe damage to corn and oats, and gardens, while winds bent corn but most stood by Tuesday. Farms at Artesian, Herman Schweer, Fred Schweer, Henry Everding, and Herman Wolf reported damaged buildings, toppled trees, and a lifted tank house, but overall rains benefited growing crops.
A Senate bill 348 change requires reporting any assignment sale or transfer of real estate mortgages or notes to the county auditor within 30 days. Without recording the transfer the mortgage is not valid. The measure aims to add 1 to 2 million dollars in assessed property values. Forms will be sent to county auditors for taxpayer reporting and state examiners will audit at annual inspections.
Fred Ambrose has rented the Eugene Hale building now housing the Tripoli cafe and will start a restaurant business soon. Nora Gunsalus, operator of the Tripoli cafe, has leased the White Star Billiard parlor space and will move the restaurant equipment this week for a new location next week. Ambrose aims to open by August first, with repairs and remodeling underway on both floors. The Ambrose family will reside on the second floor, which is being converted into living quarters.
Dr and Mrs Frank Anderson of Newark New Jersey and Miss Ruth Anderson of Cedar Falls were guests of Mr and Mrs Wayne Acken at a six o clock dinner at their home Monday.
The Bockhaus-Bartels post No. 356 Legion team was eliminated Friday by Waterloo 4 to 3 in extra innings. Waterloo benefited from two Dunkerton players and three from La Porte City. The deciding run came with two outs on the Cedar Falls college grounds. The local team plans more games, including two scheduled against Cedar Falls.
The Rosenow family gathered for their annual reunion at Sumner park on Sunday July 2. Oldest attendee was 70 year old Mrs Louisa Rosenow and the youngest was 19 days old, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Arnold Pries. A picnic lunch followed a 5 o'clock meal with many relatives from Sumner Elma Independence Tripoli and Long Beach California Navy veteran Harold Schwake among those listed.
After American Savings re opened last Wednesday two more Bremer county banks received unrestricted operation releases. Readlyn Savings opened last Thursday on an unrestricted basis and Farmers State Bank Plainfield will open this week without restrictions after the state banking department granted release on Monday.
Miss Elizabeth Stech of Fairmont Minnesota was married on June 27 to Clarence F. Burgeson of Austin Minnesota. She is the daughter of Rev and Mrs E J Stech formerly of Tripoli. The couple will live in Austin after August 1 where Mr Burgeson is managing editor of the Austin Daily Herald.
Tripoli electric light and power customers will see a 3 percent bill reduction starting October 1 under a clause in the federal industrial control bill. The tax on light and power shifts from consumers to producers, after having been paid by customers for a year.
The body of Rev August Albert 82 was brought here for burial Friday. Former Siegel Lutheran pastor who moved to Des Moines after his wife died in 1923 was struck by a motorcycle last Tuesday and killed. Survived by daughter Mrs Sternberg of Des Moines and two sons Rev Theo Albert of Emden IL and Rev Victor Albert of Galveston TX. Services were held at St Pauls Lutheran church and he was laid to rest beside his wife in St. Pauls cemetery.
Mrs Emma Miller aged 51 died Saturday afternoon at Mercy hospital from a stroke suffered earlier. Survived by husband and four children Lloyd Dale Velada Fails Verally Fay. Funeral services were held from Koch funeral home Monday with Rev George A Stauffacher of First Evangelical Church officiating. burial in Andrew's cemetery.
The annual event will be held on the home lawn with two sermons and speeches. Rev J Oltmann of Eldora will deliver an English sermon in the morning while Rev J Gehret of Westgate preaches in German. At 2 PM Prof Skar of Iowa State Teachers College will speak, and Rev Wenninger, the home superintendent, will also address attendees.
R. A. Monpleasure of Mason City, deputy state game warden, has been transferred to Waverly to serve Bremer Butler and Chickasaw counties. The Izaak Walton league chapter aided the move to better monitor illegal fishing and hunting in the area.
Miss Marie Wedemeier and Raymond Kingsley, both of this city, united in marriage at New Hampton on Sunday, June 25. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Wedemeier and the groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Kingsley, resides with his wife at home in the city where he works for the county in road construction.
Waverly briefs note the recently bought rock crusher arrived in the city last week but no location decided yet. The orphans' home group enjoyed a picnic at the tourist park with St. Pauls Lutheran aids. Mary Ladage earned a spot on Iowa State Teachers College scholastic honor roll with 70.3 points over 17.5 hours. Shirley Kramer undergoes eye surgery at Mercy Hospital and is recovering well. Herman Steege and Minnie Te tegmeier wed at St. Pauls Lutheran parsonage with Rev. Schlueter officiating. The couple plans to reside in Waverly. Mrs. S. E. Brayton learned of her brother Leslie Cutler’s death in St. Paul, survived by his wife.
