Chinch Bugs Cause More Damage Than Grasshoppers
AMES June 27 reports from southern Iowa county agents show chinch bugs destroying several hundred fields of small grain and corn. The infestation surpasses last year’s grasshopper impact in western Iowa. Farmers use gas plant and coal tar refuse to build barriers amid migration into corn. Dr. Carl J. Drake notes spray methods are costly. kerosene emulsion and oil sprays are favored. State entomologist and ISU extension hold meetings to teach control, with possible reduced-cost oil via large crude oil firms.
