Yellow River Forest opens for Iowa campers in 1962

The Iowa Conservation Commission reports a record 7 million visitors and 311000 camping days across 40 state campgrounds in 1962. Yellow River Forest in northeast Iowa, centered on Paint Creek, offers prime timber, trout streams and a 100 foot fire tower. Scenic bluffs, wildlife and solitude attract campers, though road resurfacing may slow access. Notable highlights include visitors from Massachusetts and Illinois, Colonel John Glenn’s Palisades visit, and a seven week old baby’s first camping trip with multiple weekend pitches.
