The corn hog reduction plan announced by Secretary Wallace targets a 20 percent cut in 1932-33 average corn acreage with optional excess retirements. It requires 25 percent reductions in 1934 hog litters and hogs marketed, imposes 1932 33 baseline limits on crops and livestock, and grants 30 cents per bushel on contracted corn plus $5 per hog, subject to deductions and administrative costs.

Normal Consumption Won't Solve Surplus in Pork

The article argues that returning to normal pork consumption won’t fix the corn-hog crisis. 1932 meat demand rose per capita while total meat and lard consumption fell, with pork exports shrinking. Iowa State economist I W Arthur notes higher pork prices may shift consumption to other meats as supply remains ample. US hog slaughter and export figures from 1926 to 1933 are examined, showing domestic supply still exceeds pre-crisis demand.
