The Bremer county farm bureau met December 18 at Waverly Community building to endorse Roosevelt Wallace recovery programs. A. P. Juhl was re elected president with Geo M Vosseller as treasurer and J K Lynes as vice president. W M George named home project chair. Otto Walther secretary. Reports praised 1933 home project activity and women club work. Roosevelt letter read at gathering.
In Frederika Special the Christmas program at the Methodist church basement Sunday includes songs It Came Upon the Midnight Clear Sunbeam Class and Hark the Angels Song, prayers by Rev A W Gable recitations by June Carroll Verda O Rourke Robert Lenius Sunbeams Little Jewels classes Grandpas Christmas Surprise pageant The event ends with a Santa visit and treats.
William Steinbron fractured his left leg while trimming a tree as a limb struck it. Dr. P. J. Amlie reduced the fracture and assists care. Steinbron aided Leslie Vogt cutting wood on the Dick Kirchhoff timber, tenant on Miss Fannie Guiney’s northwest farm.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Tegtmeier hosted a Sunday event to mark his 58th birthday with a 5:30 dinner. Guests from nearby towns attended including Rudolph Piegeors Irma F H Tegtmeier August Towne J A Koch and others. The afternoon featured visiting and cards, followed by refreshments served by the hostess and her daughter.
The Buttermakers held their monthly convention at Western Douglas. Top scorers included George Heine 9344 first, Leon Qualley 9314 second, and W Spurbeck 93 third. Other scores listed for members and judges cite Paul Schroeder, J H Schroeder, and Mrs Geo Heine among others with percentages and points off.
William Hallett, 76, died at his home in Forrest City on Tuesday December 19 at 2 30 pm from heart trouble and complications. He had been ill a year and bedridden four weeks. Funeral services Friday December 22 at 1 30 pm at home and 2 pm at the Methodist church. Burial in the family lot. Attending the funeral will be Mr. and Mrs. C L McCumber and Mr. and Mrs. D W Chapin. Mrs Hallett was Lauretta Chapin, sister of A D and D W Chapin.
The Independent School District of Tripoli will publicly sell the two residences of Mrs. Fred Kuhrt and Mrs. Herman Bunger, recently purchased to provide space for a new high school. Two barns on the property will also go to the highest bidder in a December 27 auction.
A corn-hog meeting is set for Friday evening in Frederika as part of a county series. An explanation of the corn-hog contract will be provided to attendees.
Santa Claus will visit Tripoli Saturday afternoon December 23 at 2 o clock. He arrives at the same time and place as last year and plans to meet every boy and girl with plenty of sacks of candy and nuts. About 600 sacks were distributed on the previous visit.
The payroll on civil works projects in the county for December 6 to 12 totaled $2,918.65 paid to 233 men, with most checks issued December 16. Projects included Quarry in Waverly, Cedar River dredging, Plainfield, Leroy township, office help, Frederika, Tripoli, Sumner, Janesville, Readlyn, Denver, state road work, and state forestry. The next payroll will rise by at least $800 as more men join the county quota of 312 employed.
Mrs Carl Kirchhoff hurt her right arm in a fall on icy steps last Friday noon. Initial reports said a two place break, but x rays showed a crack below the elbow and injury above it. She was taken to a local hospital where a cast was applied.
Camp Fire girls under guardians Vernice Conklin and Charlotte Bennett and assistants Gladys Ambrose and Mildred Hanker sang Christmas carols to the sick and shut ins Tuesday evening. About sixteen homes were visited by the group.
A Sunday family reunion gathered at Mr. and Mrs. Tom Sievers home northwest of Tripoli. Attendees included Will Sievers his wife and daughter Jane of Fortma California and Mrs Art Slack with her husband and sons Herbert Harry and daughter Helen of Gothenburg Nebraska. Other Sievers relatives from the vicinity joined, with visits continuing through Monday before departures for Gothenburg.
Otto Warneke, county unemployment registrar, calls men who registered on September 30 or October 2 and are not employed to report at Broadie drug store building in Waverly to renew applications. Employed men need not renew. If not renewed, their cards will be removed from eligibility list. National reemployment service requires all job seekers to report every thirty days until placed.
John Schmidt dislocated his right shoulder and sustained a side bruise after falling about 16 feet from a hay loft in his barn Monday evening. He runs a farm about one mile northwest of town and was treated at a local hospital before being returned to the home of his brother H. F. Schmidt Tuesday.
Christmas falls on Monday this year and local stores will open for a few hours that day. They will begin at their usual opening time and close at 9 30 a m for the remainder of the day to serve customers.
About 17 000 will be distributed to Tripoli State Bank depositors in a final dividend paid Thursday December 21 at American Savings Bank. Examiner G W Berger will distribute checks and receipts for sale all day. The bank closed three years ago in October, with total realization just over 20 percent including a prior 10 percent dividend. general creditors receive 5 percent in final settlement.
Bremer county jurors named to serve in the January 1934 term of district court with Judge M. F. Edwards presiding. Grand jurors for 1984 include Freddie Bergman and several others from Waverly Readlyn Sumner Plainfield and nearby towns. Filing of new cases has been light recently.
The American Legion and Auxiliary held their first Christmas party December 18 at the Legion hall for children of ex service members and auxiliary members. About 100 attended as a program featured a broadcasting station with Dr. E C Claus as announcer. Mrs E C Claus and Mrs J A Hale led the program with Mrs C B Kelsey and Mrs E C Claus coordinating. Santa Claus distributed candy sacks after a Santa visit, followed by popcorn balls and homemade candy. The event, decorated with a Christmas tree, was declared an annual affair, and non-perishable food collected will help fill baskets for needy families. Junior girls presented Mrs W H Warner with a boudoir gift. Santa Claus will visit Tripoli Saturday.
The Bremer county corn hog committee appointed by the county warehouse board selected township representatives across Polk Howard L Roach as president and others as vice-president secretary treasurer and township members. A training and signup plan was unveiled with committees subject to farmers signing contracts and potential changes.
