Federal NRA Team Visits Carroll County

Federal officials evaluating a Mississippi River National Recreation Area visited Savanna and Carroll County with eight team members from the Corps of Engineers the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation and the Upper Mississippi Wildlife and Fish Refuge. They discussed a proposed 40000 acre area and future plans spanning fifty to one hundred years will determine potential inclusion of Carroll County and nearby lands. The team plans additional visits through June and will produce a final evaluation report after months of study.

Prom Royalty Crowns at Mount Carroll Event

The Junior-Senior prom at Shimer College Mount Carroll crowned Mae Tipton queen and Steven Houzenga king amid a Friday night dance in the Karyn Kupsinet theater. A banquet preceded the event in Naaman Dieh auditorium and a bowling party followed at Palisades Bowl Savanna into the early morning.

Thomson Alumni Banquet Plans Near Completion

The Thomson high school alumni reunion is set for May 31 in the Thomson gymnasium. President Ronald Bull urges alumni to return reservations quickly to finish final committee plans. Honorees include the classes of 1944 and 1929 marking their 25th and 40th anniversaries with toastmistresses Mrs. Robert Johnson and Mrs. Ted Storm.

Mailand Resigns As Band Director

The Thomson Community Unit School District board accepted the resignation of band director Earle Mailand after he notified the board of his departure. Penny, daughter of Mrs James Baker, celebrated her seventh birthday with a party at her Thomson home.

Andrew J. Local Hospital Admissions and Procedures

The Sick Paul Munson underwent emergency surgery Wednesday night in Doctor's Hospital Modesto California. Mrs. Lloyd Olds of Grand view was a surgical patient in St. Clare Hospital Monroe Wisconsin from Wednesday to Saturday. Mrs. Gerald Olsen was a Thursday overnight observation patient in Mercy Hospital. Lester Mitchell Sr. was admitted to Mercy hospital Tuesday as a medical patient. Mrs. Robert Williams was dismissed from Mercy hospital Friday after surgery there Tuesday. Mrs. Mervin Marshall will be home for another month with no visitors or phone calls after a mild heart attack. Tom Mode entered University Hospital Iowa City Wednesday for observation.

Honor Students Named Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Honor students Vicki Holmquist and Deborah Buh were named valedictorian and salutatorian at Awards Day. Vicki scored 3.75 GPA and plans to attend Western Illinois University at Macomb, while Deborah scores 6.65 on a 4.0 scale and will enter the University of Illinois at Urbana. They will deliver valedictory and salutatory addresses at the eighth grade commencement Wednesday evening.

Heavyweights Win Track Crown at Thomson Jr High Meet

Thomson Jr High boys won the heavyweight title with 45 points, beating the runner up by 14. Ken Schoen set a new 680 yard time of 2:33, surpassing last year’s mark. Schoen placed in multiple events including 100 yd dash third and 880 yd run first.
