Savanna Army Depot hosts Armed Forces Day open house on May 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Visitors tour Building 412 AMC Ammunition Center, view equipment displays, storage drawings, and packaging work. Civilian staff explain vehicles, ambulances, and depots services including the chapel and Vietnam evac photos.
Robert M. Duff of Thomson Illinois received a 160 cash award on May 14 for recommending a conveyor conversion at Lock and Dam 13 Fulton Illinois to fill sandbags. The improved method doubled sandbag filling production and saved an estimated 3164 in man hours. Colonel Walter C. Gelini District Engineer presented the award.
The Savanna Army Depot hosts a full Armed Forces Day program on Saturday May 17 with an 11 a.m. opening and 3 30 p.m. closing. Nearly 4000 are expected to attend featuring riot control demonstrations firefighting displays a drum corps ROTC drill teams and awards presentations. Exhibits include helicopter and vehicle displays aviation and medical displays plus a depot tour program and service recruiters in attendance.
Funeral services were held for Annabelle L. Morse 24 of Savanna at the Methodist church after a Friday morning single car crash that killed her and Robert L. Brinkman 21. Brinkman, of Liberty Missouri, died at the scene while Morse died after extraction from the mangled car. The driver was not identified. Burial followed at Savanna Township cemetery.
Leo Hengtgen of Elgin has returned to work at Flexonies Corp in Bartlett Illinois after a January heart attack that left him off the job for three months. He is a former Thomson resident married to Kathleen Isenhart of Thomson. His sister Mrs Ed Andring lives in Thomson. Sunday dinner guests included Mr and Mrs Joe Root and Karen, and Mr and Mrs William Wagner and family of Bensonville and Mr and Mrs Ben Wagner. The Root’s son Allen phoned from Ft Polk Louisiana to wish his mother a Happy Mother’s Day and said he will graduate from basic training Friday.
The Registered Nurses of Northwestern Illinois meet May 20 at 8 00 p m in the Lutheran Church Milledgeville. Guest speaker Dr Darrell Erickson Sterling pediatrician speaks on New Concepts of Immunity. Discussion on pending nurse legislation follows hosted by Mrs Marilyn Parks Mrs Carol Sauer and Mrs Margaret Livengood
About fifty students from Shannon Pearl City Erie Fulton and Thomson attended a journalism workshop at Thomson High School. Alfred Ames of the Chicago Tribune spoke about his career, Tribune staffing, and apprentice paths at the paper.
Carroll County Superintendent Wendell L Huston announced Deborah Bush of Thomson as the recipient of one of the two general Carroll County scholarships. The award covers four years of tuition and certain fees at Illinois state universities, with McCormick as the alternate after he declined a college placement. Deborah, daughter of Mr and Mrs R C Bush, held FTA FHA Science Club offices, is in the Varisty band and cheered for three years and plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana this fall.
Rex Lower and Seth Yerr ington sue Plains Cattle Co Inc and Larry Neuschwanger in Carroll County Circuit Court seeking 20000 damages for allegedly negligent feeding. Plaintiffs say gates were left open on April 17 allowing 124 cows to eat protein heavy corn, causing 11 deaths and 21 unmothered calves, plus vet costs and labor. They allege a verbal contract required keeping cattle in a feed lot and no protein feed.
Two Lanark teens Kristy Kloepping and Paula Schneider pleaded guilty to illegal possession of liquor by a minor and illegal transportation, each receiving $100 fines plus costs. Fulton man Robert Stage was found guilty of DUI and fined $250 plus $27.40 costs. Emma Turney of Lanark was fined $50 plus $10 costs for illegal transportation with a broken seal and $10 for lights violations after warnings.
The Donald Ashpole Legion approved a 500 donation at the May meeting to fund equipment and uniforms for the Thomson youth summer baseball program under Herbert St. Ores Jr. Two youths Tim Gray and Steven Brock were chosen to attend Illinois Boys State with Steven Hebeler as an alternate. A Memorial Day potluck in Old Mill park was set for 2:00 p.m. at Savanna with parades and cemetery ceremonies. The Thomson Varsity Band will join the Legion district convention in Dixon on June 1.
David E. Murray of Sterling, a former Thomson resident and attorney, was aboard an American Airlines flight from Washington to Chicago when the pilot became ill. Dr. Thomas Geleharter of Bethesda, MD, treated the stricken pilot as the jet neared O Hare, and the co pilot and flight engineer landed the 92 passenger flight safely. The pilot was revived and taken to a hospital after landing. Murray was returning from the National Chamber of Commerce meeting in Washington.
Thomson Woman's Club selected Pam Kaufman and Larry McWorthy for scholarships to a music camp from June 29 to July 5. Pam is a junior, chorus and band participant, FHA and 4-H officer. Larry, a senior, is band club president and first cornet, aiming for a veterinary degree.
Mr and Mrs Dale Eslinger hosted a hamburger fry Saturday evening at their home. Guests included Mr and Mrs Cal Eslinger and Kathy, Mr and Mrs Alan Hickey, Mrs Dave Bealer and family, and Mr and Mrs Roger Eslinger of Joliet.
Mrs. Ray Westfall hosted the Stitch and Chatter club at her Savanna home on Tuesday. Guests received a May flower favor and the centerpiece featured Valley and tulips. The next meeting is set for June 3 with Mrs. A. O. Hansen.
Mr and Mrs Donald Atherton of Savanna announce the birth of an 8 lb 10 oz daughter on Wednesday May 14 at Savanna City Hospital. Maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Norman Hatfield of Savanna and paternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Dwight Atherton of Thomson.
The Carroll County Pomona Grange met Monday evening May 12 at the Black Oak Grange Hall. A Go To Church event is planned May 18 at Milledgeville Lutheran Church at 1045 am with a picnic at Paul Sites home. June 7 practice for fifth degree at 7 30 pm and June 9 coffee and fifth degree work will be provided. The program theme is Gods Greatest Gift A Mother with a group spelling out Mother in poems and readings led by Mrs Merle Law and others. Memorial service conducted by Chaplain Mrs Merle Law closed the gathering.
Miss America 1969 Judi Ford of Belvidere will headline the 4-H Week on the University of Illinois campus June 17 to 20. G L Daigh expects 1,300 4-H members and 200 adults from 102 counties for the 10th annual conference with Richard Morris and Herb True also participating. Ford will tour the campus and share insights from her Miss America year as visiting 4-Hers join career sessions and consumer education workshops.
Carroll's pork producers report over 100 new members added to the Carroll County Association after a meeting with Illinois Pork Producers Executive Secretary Chuck Bloomberg. County chair Russell Zier, Jr. and secretary Paul Fogel note efforts to sell during price peaks and to support the May 25 Pork Chop Barbecue at Chadwick, provide keep out signs for hog raisers, and back the fall barrow show and carcass contest.
