Everett Smith 21 of Durand dodged police across three northern Illinois communities Saturday morning before being arrested in Moline. Safer after warnings, he was jailed on a state warrant charging assault and battery. Smith fled after his wife sought village marshal aid and key towns broadcast his description nationwide.
By June 1, 1938 property taxes and first real estate installments totaled 402 141.82 dollars paid toward a 655 050.99 levy in Carroll county. The 61.4 percent compares to 62.1 percent paid by June 1, 1937. Fair Haven Lima Sharon top at 68 percent, Washington township 54 percent.
A May death in an automobile accident increases northern Illinois highway fatalities for the first five months of 1939 to 12 across six counties. Carroll reports one death. Jo Daviess one. Whiteside four. Stephenson three. Ogle two. Lee one, with Carroll, Whiteside, Jo Daviess, Lee, and Ogle recording no fatalities in May except Carroll.
Clinton Chamber of Commerce announces tentative date for Mississippi River dam dedication near Clinton Iowa with talks by Col Gesler and H W Seaman. Invitations extended to national figures including Secretary Woodring and Major General Schrey. Program may feature band music and flag raising with use of the government steamer Ellen for transport and speeches transmitted to Iowa shore witnesses.
Mt Carroll American Legion disaster organization names committee heads to prepare for possible emergencies. Appointees include District emergency officer Ray Hazimin, test emergency officer Ray Westfal, mobilization Arthur Reeves and Tibor Patterson, transportation Louis L Nelson, survey traffic police Eber Shepherd, first aid Ray Hartman and Ernie Poffenberger, shelter and clothing Fred Co Leigh, and communication Kurt B Schmidt.
Governor Henry Horner proclaims June 8 to 14 as Flag Week urging public display of the flag. The proclamation says the stars and stripes symbolize liberty worship and free speech and equal rights, praising freedoms for a world where others lack it.
Miss Kathryn Thompson of Savanna wed Benjamin Ulrey of Chicago at 4:30 p m Sunday in St. Peter s Lutheran Church Savanna. Attendants included Kathryn s sister Virginia Thompson and Misses Jean Schmidt and Jane Fitzpatrick of Savanna. Harold Hendes of Chicago served as best man.
In the 16th judicial district voters elected three Republicans over incumbent Albert H. Manus, a Democrat from Freeport, who had served six years. The district turnout across 165 precincts showed Zick with 17,274 votes, Edwards 16,638, Wheat 16,546, and Manus 11,264. Manus led in Washington and Elkhorn wards and carried four Carroll precincts.
The Roche brothers James and Austin Roche lead Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement Association for May with 1031 pounds of milk and 50.4 pounds of butterfat. John Deever’s purebred Holsteins rank second at 1293 pounds and 43.0 fat. Other top five producers include Ben Williamson, Charles Hoog, and Eugene Murray with respective milk and fat figures. Two purebreds led individual high producers: Stransdale Farm No. 1 at 1702 pounds milk and 86.7 fat, and John Decrer at 1753 pounds milk and 82.6 fat across 73 cows surpassing 40 pounds fat.
A School of Instruction titled Start Check Here on the 1939 AAA program is in progress today at the county seat. The session focuses on agricultural adjustment and county guidance for local farms and leaders.
A county school of instruction for farm reporters and community committeemen opens in Mt. Carroll. The session covers the 1939 agricultural conservation program and price adjustment rules for corn and wheat, with J. V. Stevenson assisting. Subsequent inspections will determine acreages and soil building practices, and preparations for price adjustment payments will follow.
Carroll Farm Bureau officers announce community meetings in Savanna Shannon and Chadwick on June 13 14 and 16 in the evenings. A new sound film should er to shoulder will be shown and A D Brisendett and C M Seagraves will discuss primary farm safety and organization topics.
May reports show a low motor vehicle fatality rate across six northern Illinois counties. Officials caution against complacency as the period indicates improving road safety with continued enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
Frances Shimer Junior College in Mt Carroll held its commencement Monday morning. Twenty five students completed the two year course and twenty five finished the lower division. Scholarships and prizes were awarded to Elizabeth Percy Konrad trophy recipient Carol Patrice Clough Glencoe and others from Mt Carroll Chicago Edgewood Iowa Los Angeles Peoria and more. Diplomas were given to the listed graduates including Constance Clough Glencoe Mary Bullis Los Angeles Audrey Jankins Chicago and many others from across Illinois and neighboring states.
Dan Cupil showed a good mark in June with potential to continue the trend. On the opening day, three marriage license applications were filed with County Clerk Wall Watson. Applicants included Kenneth L. Truman of Lanark with Marstre M. Weber of Me Carroll, Bunjanin Alrey of Chicago with Kathryn I. Thompson of Savanna, and Harold H. Wilson of Lanark with Genevieve Nelwn of Monroe Wisconsin.
The county association runs a school of instruction for farm reporters today with a checkup on 1939 compliance starting immediately. Fifty students graduate at Frances Shimer Junior College on Monday. twenty five completed two year college work, others finished lower division. Scholarships and awards announced.
Nine Carroll county high school students sat exams at the county offices to qualify for University of Illinois scholarships. Eight sought two general awards, one aimed at home economics. no applicants for the agricultural scholarship. Applicants came from Savanna Chadwick Lanark Mt. Carroll Thomson and Thom son with four boys and four girls in the general category. Reports on results likely by July 1 as papers are checked.
The 4-H Fat Lamb Show will be held in Savanna on June 17 with nearly a hundred entries expected. Jain Rogier and J. A. Twardock will judge fat and breeding classes respectively, as local clubs and the Carroll County Farm Bureau host the event with a full day of judging, demonstrations, and a softball tournament for the 4-H clubs. Premiums range up to 8 dollars for fat lambs and 5 dollars for purebred entries, with contests and talks scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
