Hundreds of youths flood the National Youth Administration district office in Rockford with ideas for a state wide job creation contest. Open to under 25, entrants submit a profitable idea with possible drawings if needed. county winners advance to eight district finals with state prizes including four year college scholarships, private sector jobs, a trip to the World’s Fair, a farm tractor and cash.
Savanna police kept busy last week arresting several men for disorderly conduct and speeding. Transients George Coghill and Patrick Gallagher were fined $5 plus costs after a petty hearing. Ralph Sanderson and Gordon Forton paid $5 and costs for speeding. Danny Kness paid $16.75 for disorderly conduct after a later hearing. Four more Savanna men faced hearings and were released upon paying fines and costs.
Community church workers from four states hold a two day conference in Savanna. Sessions open at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. with worship, lectures on public school and church coordination, leadership training, drama and worship, and social issues. Speakers include Rev. William Richardson, Rev. David Todd, Rev. Kenneth McDaniel, Rev. Arnold Kenyon, and Dr. Herbert Willett.

A three year lease was signed last Thursday morning by William Isen hart Mt Carroll on land north east of the city where a CCC camp has stood for three years This guarantees continued soil conservation measures on county farms and is endorsed by a CCC official.
The Commodity Credit Corporation will offer 4 percent loans on the 1939 wheat crop to eligible farmers. Rates vary by wheat class and terminal locations, with No 2 hard winter at 80 cents expected in several markets and adjustments for freight, handling, and county certification. Loans on farm stored wheat mature April 20, 1940, while commercial storage loans extend seven months from note date but not past April 30, 1940.
Milwaukee railroad officials estimate the derailment and fire east of Savanna last Wednesday caused between 80 000 and 90 000 dollars in damage. Twenty one cars derailed, twelve destroyed, with extensive track and utility line damage. Repairs enabled eastbound traffic by Thursday morning and westbound shortly after. Utilities transmission lines between Savanna and Mt. Carroll were repaired, ending a two hour outage. Several cars carried gasoline fuel oil farm machinery roofing cement steel rails and refriger ators were damaged or destroyed.

Shimer alumnae association in Carroll County elected officers after a banquet in Mt. Carroll. Mrs. Violet Frank was chosen president. vice president Miss Hazel Slober. secretary treasurer Miss Rose Deominson. Executive committee named Mrs. Louise Geerson Ruth Peters Grace Watson and Hasriet Owens. Retiring officers were Miss Zella Corbett Miss Mary Defl Halderiman and Mrs Hath Wattleworth.
Edwin Keim reports strong interest in the Brown Swiss canton show to be held June 18 in Lanark with over 100 cattle expected. The event features 4 H judging contests, a Lanark 4 H dairy demonstration, a tattooing demo, and an array of program items including papers, age checks, and ribon awards, plus a noon picnic and livestock classifications.
Thieves blew open safes at the Milwaukee railroad station and Miles Lumber office in Mt. Carroll during a weekend break in. They secured only 16.87, while the lumber office safe sustained heavy damage requiring door replacement. investigators pursued leads with no arrests by Monday afternoon.
Henry Rhodes about 86, longtime Savanna resident, died Sunday at Belvidere in the home of his son in law Ives Law. He moved to Belvidere three years ago to live with his daughter and husband. Funeral services were held at the Law home in Belvidere at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Masonic rites at the Savanna cemetery later that day. He is survived by his widow, a daughter Mrs. Law, and three grandsons.
Four candidates compete for three circuit bench posts in the June 5 election. Republican Harry Wheat Scot A Zick and Harry Edwards run alongside Democrat Albert Manus. Stephenson County State Attorney is the fourth Republican. Voters may select any three. Polls open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.
Plan to develop many resorts along the Mississippi River advances as flood levels return to normal. Officials expect fishing conditions to improve with receded waters and better access to river lanes for boats and tourists.
The Mississippi shore from Thomson to Savanna is set for a resort boom as a pool north of Dam No. 13 fills bringing higher water. Riverview at five miles north west of Thomson grows with 25 to 30 private cottages and new rentals. Glenn Buckwalter of Mt. Carroll will lease Riverview tract and plans two cottages and multiple boats by July. Web's Place and Walter Green operate nearby for boat and cabin access along the river.
