The Rock Island District reports no drownings during 1969 Mississippi River boating season despite eight near miss accidents near locks and dams. Safety improvements included lifebuoys portable life preservers life skiffs safety cables and crane platforms at dams. Col Walter Celini praised the program while noting vessel maintenance and engine issues as factors in near misses.
