Legal Opinion Upholds Zoning Payment by Carroll County

Carroll County Board of Supervisors received a written legal opinion by State's Attorney Petty and Assistant Kightlinger at the December meeting. The opinion upheld the $800 payments to seven Zoning Commission members for attendance and mileage, citing Illinois statutes on per diem compensation and county authority to examine and settle accounts.

School Children Present Christmas Musical Program

Pupils from Thomson Community Unit grade schools will perform a musical program Tuesday evening December 16 at 7 30 in the school auditorium. The first four grades present The Toys that Had To Wait. Grades five and six perform Christmas in Italy Austria and Mexico under Mrs Duane Bauer with closing songs by the German Chorus directed by Paul Potratz.

Lunch menu for Tuesday to Friday

The menu lists Tuesday baked potatoes cube steaks carrots and Jello. Wednesday features chili celery and cake. Thursday offers chicken potatoes and peas with dessert. Friday serves spaghetti cottage cheese bread and cookies.

Sick Joe Shutters was admitted to Mercy Hospital last Wednesday. Leo Hathaway Jr. entered Mercy Hospital as an accident patient last Friday. Mrs. Frank Potter remains a medical patient in Savanna City Hospital. Lawrence Williams went to Veterans Hospital at Iowa City for tests and will stay several days. Tim Haifman spent Tuesday to Saturday at Mayo Clinic and St Marys Rochester MN and is now home recovering. Danny Wieinema, 14, lost a finger joint and injured another at home Saturday. treated at Medical Associates Clinton and released. Rose Plog and Irene Turner, both of Thomson, are Savanna City Hospital patients. Richard Truninger and Richard Falls were patients at Savanna Hospital. Falls was discharged after an X ray. Mrs Gerald Smith of Thomson is a patient in Jane Lamb Hospital Clinton.

Christmas Concert Highlights Thomson School Music

A strong crowd enjoyed the Thomson schools Christmas program Monday evening. Floyd Griffy led the varsity band with four pieces including Jingle Bells on Parade. Choruses and clubs performed Christmas selections, with Mrs. Dagney Bauer directing and Lori Dittmar and Kara Grim on piano.

Thomson Man Escapes Serious Injury In Snowy Highway Crash

Marvin Morgan a 60 year old of Riverview Thomson escaped serious injuries when a car carrying him spun off the DuPont overpass on U S 67 near Camanche Iowa. Driver John Doty 54 said a light snow made the viaduct slippery causing the wreck which tore out four guard rails then overturned. Morgan and Doty had just come from a North Western railroad run at 5 35 am and were returning to Clinton when the mishap occurred.

Chairman of Carroll County Board Dies at 75

Charles E. Kessler Sr. of Mt. Carroll died Wednesday in Savanna City Hospital after a short illness. He served as Chairman of the Carroll County Board of Supervisors. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Frank Funeral Home Mt. Carroll with 7 to 9 p.m. viewing Friday and Masonic services at 8:30 p.m. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Born March 8 1894 in Mt. Carroll he married Hazel Stober in Oregon Illinois January 29 1956. Survived by widow four sons including Charles Jr Gerald Herbert and Gene 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his first wife.

7th Grade Wins, 8th Loses

The Thomson seventh graders opened conference play by defeating Shannon 39 to 22. Buckner 11, James 8, and Heeler 7 led scoring. Schoening and James tied for 10 rebounds. The 8th grade suffered their fourth straight loss, trailing Shannon 48 to 28 as Johnson scored 21.

Lions Club Christmas Party Set At Legion Hall

The Thomson Lions Club plans its annual Christmas party for members and guests at 2 p.m. on Sunday December 14 at the American Legion Hall. Attendees should bring a grab bag gift for men and for women plus a dish to pass and their own table service. The club will provide the meat.

Plans for a January 24 wedding are announced for Ruth Ann Huizenga and Robert Edward Robbins. County Women Receive Honors in Girl Scout Meeting

Delegates and leaders of the Green Hills Council of Girl Scouts gathered at the Freeport YWCA for their annual meeting. Mrs. Jack Eversol of Platteville was elected council president for the coming year, with Mrs. Richard Miller named first vice president and several members-at-large added to the board. Recognition included a statuette for Mrs. Louis Akker, ten-year pins for Mrs. Willard Crichton and a twenty-year pin for Mrs. Larry Neuschwanger. Attendees from Thomson included Mr. and Mrs. Richard Miller and Mrs. Donald Kramer, both voting delegates.

Funeral Thursday for Local Man La trie Davis

Mr and Mrs Bernard Grolar attended the funeral last Thursday at Reisner Funeral Home in Aledo Illinois for Leslie Davis 44 who died suddenly on Tuesday December 2 at his Dixon Illinois home. The Trojans upset Tampico 62 to 49 on Saturday as a tough defense held the opponents to under 10 points in all four quarters. St. Ores 15 Knuth 14 Bush 13 led the scoring, with Knuth grabbing 12 rebounds. Mt. Carroll defeated the Trojans 70 65 on Tuesday, dropping the Trojans to 3 3 on the season.
