Babson Park Florida April 27. Babson urges reading policy fine print after losses from Hurricane Donna and advises buying insurance stocks. He argues insurance firms profit from restrictive clauses while urging cautious investments in life fire accident and casualty stocks.
About 150 high school students and parents attended Carroll County Careers Night at Lanark High School on April 18. The county extension council and area high schools sponsored the event with Harold Homman of Springfield as general session speaker. Twenty professionals discussed careers in home economics and agriculture, including instructors from Northern Illinois University and University of Illinois, plus educators from Polo and De Kalb.
Illinois begins daylight saving time from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. The statute, enacted by the 1959 legislature, requires clocks to advance one hour this Saturday night.
The Carroll County Mental Health Society holds its first annual meeting at Savanna Methodist church on Thursday May 4 at 730 PM featuring the Patient's Band from East Maine State Hospital as part of therapy programs. The event marks Mental Health Week and a statewide fund drive with open house at Dixon and East Moline hospitals April 30. Refreshments follow. Rev. H R Aspinall chairs the fund drive. officers will be elected and a nominating committee report given.
The state reports February sales tax shares for Carroll County municipalities totaling 6,4563.35, down nearly 2,400 from December. The January sums for Chadwick Lanark Milledgeville Mount Carroll Savannah Shannon and Thomson are listed with Chadwick at 42888 and other figures in descending order.
Earl F. Ellis, a Thomson area farmer charged with statutory rape, refused to take a lie detector test per Carroll County authorities. Ellis denied the charge and remains free on a $2,000 bond. The 13 year old girl involved submitted to a lie detector test last week.
A Thomson grade school boy who ran away April 19 was located in Chicago. Sheriff Harry Miller brought him home Friday and the boy will live with a minister in Lanark until a hearing date is set.
County Clerk W W M Nipe issues licenses to wed for Richard Luther Meier and Vicki Lynn Williams of Savannah, Don W Broderick and Joyce L Schubert of Dayton Ohio, Charles Russell Tripp of Chadwick and Cheryl Catherine Couvin of Mt Morris, Richard Allen Cambman of Milledgeville and Lois Ann Woessner of Shannon. A divorce was granted April 20 in Carroll County Circuit Court to Alma R Funk of Savanna from George B Funk.
A series of property transactions listed include Anna K Schoenhaar and Marion S Miller in Savanna, Alvie B Frey selling to Donald Hughes, Mary B Allen and others with Phillip E Young in Savanna, John G Magill to Margaret E Magill, and Valeria Mae Garman to Howard L Palmer among Savanna locales, with additional transfers in West Carroll and Mt Carroll regions. The notices reference deed statuses and parcel blocks with cross references to Frey and Hawks areas.
The Holstein-Friesian Association of America reports Terhark Terra Ester Ruth 418-7301 owned by Lowell F Terhark Shannon completed 865 days of twice daily milking producing 18 574 pounds of milk and 621 pounds of butterfat as a three year old. University of Illinois weighed and tested the production as part of the national herd testing programs involving over 2800 registered Holstein herds.
Leo D Koehler of Shan non Rt 1 was fined 100 dollars and costs by Justice of the Peace Lee Gifford for illegal possession of a deer. He paid the fine and was released after being taken into custody by Conservation Officer Paul Hensal on April 16 and released on 300 dollar bond for the April 22 hearing.
Mr and Mrs William Dowdall hosted a Sunday dinner honoring Mrs Fred Giese on her birthday. Guests included Mr and Mrs Earl Mellotte Carl and Sherry, Mr and Mrs Lloyd Baer of Sterling and Mrs Giese’s sons Lester and Lyle Morrison.
The Chadwick Woman's Club marks its last meeting of the season with a spring luncheon set for 12:30 PM on May 18. The event will be in the Re Carnet room at the Lincoln Hotel in Sterling, with reservations due by May 16 to Mrs. W. J. Schreiner or Mrs. K. W. Senneff.
Chadwick news notes weekend guests from Chambersburg Pennsylvania: Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Rotz and Fred Rotz visited Mr. and Mrs. John Sollenberger. Mrs. Fred Rotz returned home with them after a five week stay. Also present were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ferguson and family who stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rhyner in Hanover Wisconsin, and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Fisher of Coleta with Lulu Fisher of Sterling visiting Donald Fisher’s home Sunday evening.
Clyde Buss 74 died suddenly April 20 at his Lanark home. Services were held April 22 in Lanark funeral home with Rev. Merle Hawbecker officiating. Burial in Lanark cemetery. Organist Mrs. Max Sisler. pallbearers Earl Wilkin Ralph Flickinger Ralph Manning Ernest Gump William Kness Charles Zuck. Survived by wife Ione Kampmeier Buss. two sons from Lanark and Kenneth of Dallas. a brother Barton. sister Mrs Harold Kuhlmeyer. seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was born November 17, 1886 near Lena, farmed locally, retired to Lanark, and observed golden wedding anniversary last August. Member of Lena Methodist Church.
Weekend weather brought heavy rain and a sharp hailstorm with marble sized ice drifting across ground. A later windstorm caused scattered damage including downed trees, torn fences, and destroyed farm structures near Chadwick and Stransdale East, with reports of a tornadic wind event in Iowa and Illinois areas.
Farm Bureau directors honored retiring director Merle Sturtevant and new director Delbert Newcomer from Freedom Township at a Saturday potluck in the farm bureau hall. Allen Moll of Shannon, state winner of the farm bureau men’s singles bowling tournament in Decatur, received a trophy after scoring 602 pins. The program noted Carroll County’s first state winner. A film of the last IAA annual meeting was shown as part of the event. Sixty-five people attended.
Home Economics extension activities in the county will vary in May as the major lesson of each unit is its choice. Carroll Unit will visit Rockford May 3 to tour Illinois Bell, a chip factory, and shop. May 8 features a Carroll Night Unit with lessons on selecting trees and shrubs and glassware for baked ham, plus a flowering roll call. Fairhaven Unit will meet May 3 at 6 30 with 4-H mothers attending, lesson led by Mrs Sepha Plock. Extension Worker Conference attendance May 1 5 at the University of Illinois. Sunday dinner guests included Arm an Bushman family Dix, Ronald Heffelfinger Milledgeville and Albert Queckboerner.
Mrs Roy Schreiner and Tonia joined Mr and Mrs William DeVries in Morrison for Sunday hosting. Emma Miller from Milwaukee visited relatives, while Louis Braun Curtis Na niga and Clifford Faber of Fulton socialized with the Na niga family. Numerous local families attended celebrations and dinners including a birthday cake for Sheldon Geison, with guests from Sterling Lanark and Dixon among others.
Carroll County reports total Polio Drive collections of 2765.60 with detailed local tallies from Savanna, Thomson, Mt. Carroll, Shannon, Milledgeville, Chadwick, and Lanark. Breakdown shows Mothers Marches, coin collectors, clubs, school funds, personal gifts, and substantial contributions, with mailing expenses of 75.65 leaving the final balance.

Mrs Ray Margileth 69 died in Savanna City hospital after birth in Mt Carroll. survivors include husband, mother Mary Coleman and three daughters plus two brothers. Jerry Spencer of Chadwick, a Western Illinois University senior, is doing student teaching this spring in Macomb High School and Western High School. Dr. George Potter, coordinator of Laboratory Experiences, says students must complete a quarter of practice teaching under regular faculty supervision and spend at least a half day on the job.
Fourth and fifth grade pupils of Chadwick school will present Puddin Head the First, an operetta in two acts, on Tuesday May 9 at Chadwick high school gym. Programs begin 8 p m with two junior high choruses singing between acts. Admission 25 cents adults 15 cents students. Jack Hoffman directs.
J M McKean was unanimously re elected to chair Carroll County Board starting his third consecutive year as chairman. New supervisors include Harl Johnston Homer Zuck and Clyde Emnyre with districts outlined. Committees named grand jurors panels approved office space and renovations discussed for courthouse and sheriff's office.
Cheryl Colvin of Mount Morris married Charles R. Tripp of Denver in a two o clock Saturday ceremony at the bride's home. The Rev Luther Cooperrider officiated. The couple plans to live in Denver after a reception at the bride's home.
Four H and FFA members and parents gathered for the Carroll County Fat Stock Judging contest held at Glengary Farms Homer Kearns and Kenneth Schneider’s beef sheep and swine farms. A ratings went to many from Thomson Milledgeville Center Hill Chadwick Shannon and others. The FFA daily judging contest will be held Saturday April 29 at 8 AM at Ronald Helm’s farm east of Chadwick Route 88.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Hart man were afternoon and supper guests Sunday of Mr and Mrs Guy Asay near Mt Carroll. Mr and Mrs Denton Naniga visited her parents Mr and Mrs William Lehr in Thomson Sunday afternoon and took them to visit in the Voris Corbett home at Wacker where they were neighbors before moving to Thomson. Mr and Mrs Verrien Shuman and son Steven of Chicago were over Saturday night and Sunday guests of his parents Mr and Mrs Charles Shuman.
A head on crash two miles west of Freeport on the Pearl City road injured Paul Mackey and Mrs. Mackey of Chadwick and Mrs. Gorsny of Milledgeville. Mackey suffered a fractured left leg and arm, a broken shoulder, crushed jaw, and tongue laceration and was to have further surgery. Mrs. Mackey and Mrs. Gorsny also injured. two Freeport youths hospitalized for lacerations. Vernon Kuhlemeier Jr. of Freeport charged with driving on the wrong side, dimming lights, and illegal alcohol possession.
The Happy Hoofs 4-H Club met March 20, 1961 at Stanley Knoll's Sterling Illinois. Les Litwiller presided. Dave Thorngren spoke on 4-H Federation and Harold Bachman handed out pony show entry blanks for May 7 at Bachmans Riverview Rock Falls. Plans discussed for a tour to Terry Jean Pony Farm Palatine Illinois. Stanley Knoll spoke on Leg Markings. Demonstration on clipping a pony. Meeting adjourned 9:30 p.m. Kathy Litwiller Reporter.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Adolph and family visited the Queckboerners Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Riley Temple and Travis joined Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith at the Schleming home. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rahn and daughter Karen of Oregon were Monday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shuman.
