Carroll County assessors started the 1946 cycle on April 1 and will largely use prior procedures. Valuations will be set at about 2.37 times book values to reach full value, with personal property scales for cattle horses goats sheep swine and poultry, grain rates, and a $50 minimum for household goods. Clayton Kaul of Chadwick was elected president of the Carroll County Livestock Feeders association at a March 27 meeting in Mt Carroll. Wallace Ware of Lanark was chosen secretary treasurer with directors Roy Moll Shannon Dennis Schreiner Lanark and Clarence Hartman Chadwick. About 40 to 50 members joined as speakers Frank Norrish Morrison and Mr Hollenbeck Lee County spoke of national feeders events in Omaha.

Fire Destroys Helle Lumber Sawmill at Savanna

Fire at 10 30 a m destroyed the Helle Lumber mill and warehouse on Route 8 0 near Chestnut Park. Owners Walter and Sheldon Helle estimate losses at 12 000 to 15 000 with partial insurance. Fire started in the southwest part of the mill, discovered by workers piling lumber, and spread in high winds due to limited water. The mill, 604 by 26 feet, and 12 by 16 foot warehouse burned within 30 minutes. equipment including a 900 electric saw and 10 000 feet of lumber were lost. Both brothers suffered minor burns while aiding two large motors. The brothers plan to rebuild as material becomes available amid growth in business.

Light primary vote anticipated Tuesday in local race

The upcoming primary on Tuesday April percent is expected to draw little interest in the vicinity. Legion installs new recruits across Carroll County posts

More than 500 people attended a mass installation at Mt Carroll high school gym under the Carroll County Council of the American Legion. About 150 World War II veterans joined, with most new members from recent months. A Thomson post delay prevented initiation. The Mt Morris degree team led the ceremony, Mt Carroll band provided music, and Mt Carroll Boy Scouts were ushers. Albert R. Thieves Smoke Chadwick Businesses Steal Cash in Elevator Breakin

A small sum between 10 and 15 dollars was taken from a cash drawer in the Chadwick Elevator after burglars broke in Friday night. Investigators noted broken windows and pry marks at several local shops including Handel Implement, Straub Carpentry, and a feed mill, but nothing else was reported missing.
