Four day Chicago trip planned by 4 H Stitch N Time Club

The 4 H Stitch N Time Club travels to Chicago for four days returning Friday morning. Members include Carol Salmi Karen Seppa Barbara Monti Conchita Garcia Nancy Lucma Pat Huttunen Gail Eschenbauch with chaperones Mrs Vern Carr and Mrs Bruce Cox. They funded the junket through yearlong fundraising and plan a city tour a Wrigley Field ball game and museum visits. The group praises the local chamber of commerce and city efforts to promote Wakefield as a tourist center.

Annual U P Legion Convention At Manistique

The U P Association of American Legion Paste and Auxiliaries holds its annual convention in Manistique from June 16 to 19 with 5000 attendees expected. Featured groups include Jackson Zouaves of Jackson Michigan, Charles A Young Drum and Bugle Corps Detroit, Sault Ste Marie Ontario societies, plus numerous drum and bugle corps, drill teams, the Escanaba Municipal Band, and a 20 girl baton team from Wakefield.

Bids Call for US-2 Widening Section in Gogebic County

The Michigan State Highway Department invites sealed proposals for binder widening and 8.334 miles of 22 ft concrete pavement on US-2 from Marenisco east in Gogebic County. Bids due by 11:00 a.m. EST Tuesday June 21 at Escanaba and will be publicly opened and read.

Steel men tour Gogebic range during ore study visit

About 20 engineers from Bethlehem Steel, Youngstown Mines and related firms toured the Gogebic range this week to study iron ore mining. They were underground visitors at the Peterson mine on Thursday, with Range and Duluth officials of the P-M Company as hosts. Mrs Louis Yatchak is visiting Milwaukee with her children and friends.

Special Meeting On Bus Bid Consideration By School Board

The board opened bids for a new school bus at Monday's meeting, heard four firms' offers, and tabled them for further study. A special meeting will be held next Monday to reconsider bids. The session also approved May finances, elected a July 11 election board, and organized the fall meeting schedule. A Wakefield water safety program, Eddy Park swim classes, and lifeguard plans were announced with registration beginning June 20.

US-2 upgrade from Jackson Creek to Gogebic Station planned

Sub contractors begin work on US-2 from Jackson Creek east to Marenisco for a new surface of bituminous concrete. Thornton Construction Co of Hancock holds the general contract for about 331 thousand 479 dollars and 15 cents. Much of the existing concrete will be removed, drainage structures replaced, and the right of way cleared. Bids will be opened Monday for additional mileage from Marenisco east to Gogebic Station, a project similar to the Wakefield east contract.

Detroit conference prompts Terwilliger reassignment note

The Rev. R. Terwilliger, pastor of the Methodist church, attends the annual conference in Detroit. He is not expected to be reassigned to his charge for the coming year and has reportedly requested a southern Michigan pastorate to stay nearer his family.

Seniors to Attend Milwaukee Braves Games

Eight 1955 graduating seniors who earned letters in high school athletics traveled Friday morning to Milwaukee to watch two Milwaukee Braves home games on Saturday and planned to return Sunday evening. They were accompanied by J. Carr.

City Manager Leonard Harris Expected to Be Released Friday

Leonard Harris, Hancock hospital patient for nearly three weeks, is expected to be released Friday after embolism in the leg on May 29 during a Hancock visit. He plans to resume duties next week.

Pipeline equipment shipment from Anderson Bros storage yard

A number of cars of pipe line construction gear were moved from the Anderson Bros storage lot north of Sunday Lake to a Wyoming destination. The equipment has remained there since the pipe line project finished two years ago.

SS Manager Dies in Upper Peninsula

Wheelock Faul Chamberlain, 60, manager of the social security administration in the upper peninsula, died of a heart attack Tuesday evening at the Douglas House in Houghton. He often visited this area on duty and spoke to service clubs and local groups.

Free Chest X Ray Clinic-loc on Main Street Marenisco

Marenisco residents can get a free chest x ray Monday June 20 from noon to 8 pm at Main Street as part of Operation C Y C Check Your Chest. Health officer Dr D C Eisele emphasizes early detection benefits while technicians Griffith and Wald can perform 125 per hour. Five dollars is offered to the oldest man and woman scanned.

Robert Burns Jones celebrated his second birthday with family at his grandparents Gust and Mary Wuorinen’s River Street home. Edward Hoffman Wins Morchisco School Board Seat

Edward Hoffman was elected to Morchisco Township School Board at the annual meeting defeating Rose Childers 147 to 65 with 3 spoiled ballots among 215 total votes. He replaces Leo Arnestad who did not seek reelection. Hoffman’s three year term runs to June 30, 1958.

Mill idle as power plant breakdown halts Connor Co.

The Connor Co mill remains idle after a major power plant breakdown two weeks ago. Plans near completion for a temporary restoration to drive machinery, but reopening is indefinite and full operation is not expected soon.

Burns elected vice president at large of Michigan Elks

Robert A. Burns, local attorney and longtime Elks leader from Bessemer, was elected vice president at large of the Michigan Elks Association at the Soo convention last weekend. A Marquette University law graduate, he has served as city, township and school attorney and helped launch the Ath Rotar club of Rotary, with youth initiatives gaining local and statewide support.

Two New Dwellings Permit Issued on Pierce Street

Building permits approved this week cover two new houses on Pierce street. Louis Mezzano gains permission to build a seven room brick veneer one story residence at Neidhold and Pierce with concrete block basement and brick veneer over a wood frame. Gust Rolfsman of Hanson Bros. Garage begins a one story ranch style five room dwelling in the 1000 block of Pierce. Several other minor improvements were authorized during the week, city clerk reports.

Rena Wiita Wakefield Native Dies at 54

Mrs. Rena Isabelle Wiita 54 formerly of Wakefield died unexpectedly Sunday at 9 30 p m at the home of her son and daughter in law in Hurley. Born Rena Noall September 22 1900 in Michigamme she moved to Wakefield as a child. She married Emil Willa in 1921 who died years ago. Surviving are two sons Donald in Wakefield and Robert two daughters Mrs Jack Brown Ironwood and Mrs William Pilton Hurley 13 grandchildren a brother John Noall Belding and three sisters Mrs Carl A Johnson Mrs John Henry Carter and Mrs Robert Bennetts. Mrs Wilta was a twin.

Mail service delayed by one hour in city time change

Local postmaster Mr Bedell announced mail delivery will be one hour later than usual until Oct 1 when clocks revert to standard time. Trains remain scheduled on Central Standard Time. Deliveries to businesses and homes will occur one hour later during this period.

Cpl Mezzano recently promoted from patrolman to Corporal with the Michigan State Police has been transferred to West Branch. Mrs Mezzano and the family will join him there to establish their home.

Hospital Addition Nears Completion At Divine Infant

The Divine Infant Hospital addition is nearing completion with interior work nearly finished and equipment installation underway in kitchens and laboratories. Dedication is planned after final completion, with parking improvements along Brotherton Street and two blocks from US 2 to Hickock Street. Robert A Burns reports about 90 percent of pledges paid and invites further contributions to fund more equipment for public service.
