Former Resident Receives Holmes Safety Honor

John S. Wilde, 65, Manistique, long time Inland Steel quarry supervisor, earned the Joseph A. Holmes certificate of honor from the U S Bureau of Mines for 24 years without a fatal accident. He led Port Inland crews on 6,176,999 man hours producing 75,301,788 tons of crushed limestone without a casualty, and he was presented the award in Duluth as a Schoolcraft county road commissioner.

Adoption of Central Time by ES City Officials

The ES Time City offices will switch to daylight saving time at midnight with the mayor J H Kent proclaiming the change Thursday and the council approving it. Churches and the Sunday Lake mine plan to adjust schedules. Ironwood city commission met to endorse the shift, which will start Saturday night and run through October 1, aligning Bessemer and surrounding townships and the entire state’s counties in the Upper Peninsula to legal time.

Iron River Man Dies In Car Crash Near County Line

John Alfred Andreasen, 31, died at Stambaugh General Hospital from injuries after a crash on US-2, west of Iron River. Meloche, 38, Detroit broker, swerved and collided. both cars left the highway near an Iron County Gogebic county line spot. Andreasen, a Lindahl Chevrolet salesman, was married Feb 12 and lived at 522 Cedar Ave Iron River.

Wakefield Adopts Daylight Saving Time For Summer

Wakefield City Council approves Eastern Standard Time with Daylight Saving for June 11 to October 1. All businesses churches and homes asked to set clocks forward one hour at midnight to align with Michigan time. Broken Engine Closes Connor Company Mill

About 40 men at the Connor Lumber and Land Co. sawmill north of Thomaston are sidelined after a steam turbine section blew out Friday, causing extensive damage. Mill operations are idle until after July 4, with management weighing diesel or electric power substitutions and a reduced yard force remaining on site.

Elks Banquet Set At Bessemer Club June 18

The Elks Club in Bessemer hosts a royal banquet on June 18 at 6 30 p m honoring Past Exalted Rulers of the Lionwood and Bessemer lodges. E J Joppa has been named general manager of mines in the Lake Superior district announced by A D Chisholm partner of Pickands Mather at Duluth. Joppa formerly supervised Plymouth and Anvil mines in Wakefield and later led Mesaba range operations. He led mine operations for the firm under Kenneth Duncan. School Census Reports Gain Over Last Year in Wakefield

Wakefield Township School District census of residents under 20 shows 1605 children, up from 1568 in 1954. The tally lists 239 boys and 222 girls under four, 603 boys and 541 girls aged five to eighteen, totaling 842 boys and 763 girls overall.

Tax rate clash over millage amid budget delay

Taxpayer James Trebilcock challenged the 31.75 mill rate on a $4,048,725 valuation, arguing city needs cap at 22 mills. City attorney Robert A. Burns cited state board valuation of $6,272,812 lowering rate to about 20.5 mills, while last year’s rate ran roughly seven mills lower.
