Wakefield Considers City Employee Pay Increases
The Wakefield city council will study wage scale increases at a special session. City manager Leonard Harris proposed a $10 monthly raise for salaried workers and 5 cents per hour for general labor, with a tentative plan for $15 monthly and 10 cents hourly in specific areas. A week paid vacation was discussed. The council will meet Saturday to finalize figures before the July 1 budget year. The finance report showed a June 1 cash balance of $22,378.91 plus library and water bond funds.

The Michigan state highway department received bids Monday for improvements along 32.8 miles of M-28 from the South Shore crossing at Tula to Bruce Crossing and 8.3 miles of paving from Marenisco east to Gogebic Station. Mid-America Engineering Corp of Skokie Ill is the low bidder for M-28 at 43123 for non skid bituminous pavement. Thornton Construction Co of Hancock is the low bidder for US-2 grading drainage and surface work at 299562 and also holds the contract to repair and surface the US-2 section from Jackson's Creek east to Marenisco.

City Council Aims to Enforce Boat Muffler Law
The city will seek aid from state and city police to enforce a rule banning speed boats on lakes within the city after Monday’s council vote. Residents complain of loud, day and night motor boat noise. City attorney R A Burns said state and local police can require mufflers on all motor boats. Complaints came from families with children and people who work night shifts.
