Burns named Michigan Elks president at Pontiac convention

Robert A. Burns was unanimously acclaimed president of the Michigan Elks association at the recent Pontiac convention. He will form a commission to chart a half century plan focusing on educational scholarships youth programs veterans aid and strengthening the Elks Foundation. Burns has held multiple Elks roles and is active in Rotary and local government. Also noted was the death of Mrs. J. S. Gilbert 70 of Lansing and services plans.

Wakefield man John Mazurek 73 dies at home

John Mazurek, 73, longtime Wakefield resident, died Thursday at his home on Charles Street after years of ill health. He worked at local mines and for the city. Survived by his wife, four children, and three stepchildren, including John Mazurek, Walter Mazurek, Joe Mazurek, and Mary Baker, with stepchildren Pearl Cebolski, Frank Urbanski, and Eddie Urbanski. Funeral rites are pending, expected Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, Lakeside Memorial Chapel arranging.

City Council to Convene Monday for Routine Matters

The city council will meet Monday afternoon to discuss routine matters. A salary increase for the chief of police is on the agenda, along with the city manager’s request to attend the International Conference of City Managers in Alberta, Canada, in September.

Four Candidates For School Board At July 9 Vote

Four candidates qualified for two vacancies on the board of education to be filled at the election and annual meeting set for Monday July 9. Eli Mustapaa seeks a second term of three years. Other nominees are Carl W. Pikka Charles Walesano Theodore R. Wasielewski. Clarence A. Jacobson, incumbent president, is not seeking re election after 14 years on the board. John W. Thomas will resign July 1 to be succeeded by Carl Kleimola for a three year contract. Thomas and Mrs. Thomas plan to move to Mesa Arizona later in July for health reasons. Kleimola comes from Hector Minnesota where he was principal and acting superintendent. Thomas thanked the board for his 20 years as superintendent.

Chamber of Commerce to Honor Thomas at Legion Club Dinner

Members and guests of the Chamber of Commerce and their wives will dine at the Legion Club Saturday evening and honor Mr and Mrs John W Thomas. A short program is planned and a barbershop quartet from Ironwood will provide music for the event.

Pat Niemi Receives BS at Northern Michigan College

Pat Niemi earned a bachelor of science degree at commencement exercises held last Saturday morning at Northern Michigan College in Marquette, Michigan. She completed her studies in February and taught in Crystal Falls for the past five months, and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Nestor Niemi of Wicolocation.

Wakefield students earn degrees at Michigan and Wheaton

Miss Nancy Haglund will receive a public health nursing degree at the University of Michigan commencement in Ann Arbor this weekend. Wakefield participants include her mother Mrs. John R. Haglund and brother Jack, plus Mrs. Florence Bordeau and her son. Joanne M. Lane of Harrison Street earns a nursing diploma at Northwestern University Evanston campus with her parents and Mrs. C. A. Jacobson in attendance. Patricia Gates earns a bachelor of arts at Wheaton College and plans to teach in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Wakefield attendees include Mr. and Mrs. Gates and daughter Jean. Two Wakefield men, Robert J. Mattson and Louis W. Verch, receive B.S. degrees at Michigan College of Mining and Technology Huntington, completing studies in mechanical engineering and forestry respectively, and both are Wakefield High School graduates.

Elias Oja Rites Saturday Afternoon

Funeral services for Elias Oja 68 will be held at First Lutheran church Saturday at 2:00. Oja died Wednesday morning after a heart attack. He lived in Wakefield over 49 years, came from Finland in 1907, and retired from Sunday Lake mine in 1955. He is survived by his wife four daughters one son and four grandchildren. He was active in church boards and helped plan the church. Lakeside Memorial Chapel will be open Friday evening and Saturday morning until 11:00 before transfers.

Funeral Rites Held For Mrs Bartolo Salo 74

Mrs Bartolo Salo 74 died Thursday June 7 at Divine Infant Hospital after a year long illness. Born September 3 1881 in Valle Venito Bellano Italy she married Bartolo Salo in December 1926 and moved to Wakefield June 27 1927. Funeral held Monday at 9 a m Immaculate Conception Church with burial in Lakeside Cemetery. Pallbearers listed from local and out of town mourners.

The American Legion will lead the morning parade and children's sports. Demeter Stoya noff oversees a Sunday Lake speed boat race in the afternoon, with entries to be collected. VFW will run the evening fireworks at Sunday Lake starting about 8:00, and the full day program will be released next week by committee leaders.

Local minister receives bachelor of divinity degree

The Rev. Donald C. Carpenter, pastor of the Methodist church, was awarded a bachelor of divinity from the Garrett Biblical Institute at Northwestern University during Monday afternoons commencement. Since November 1955 he has pastored Methodist churches in Newport Ironwood Bessemer and Wakefield.

School Census Shows Decline In Population

Wakefield city and township school district census as of May 31, 1956 records 1546 children under 20, down 59 from 1605 a year earlier. Five to nineteen years total 1140, down 4. under five years 406, down 55. Age breakdown lists small counts across single year groups, with five to six at 98 and eight to nine at 99, while 19 to 20 has 54. First decline in five years, after 1952 saw 1041 five-to-nineteen year olds.

Allocation of state motor vehicle highway funds for the first quarter allocates Wakefield 15972.31 dollars, Gogebic County 118860.75, Bessemer 13316.51, and Ironwood 40403.58. The weight and gasoline tax share follows with Gogebic County Road Commission receiving 7684.61, Wakefield 1025.11, Bessemer 854.66, and Ironwood 2593.11.
